Central Boiler / Re: She's tucked in for the summer

I've shut down once or twice first time due to running out of wood.Second time was due to mother nature fooling with the climate. I just thought I was done.  Hoping this weekend will the charm. It's not been a seriously cold winter but it seems to have dragged on for longer than usual.  I have to replace a door gasket along with a major cleaning inside and out.

I've got a Ranco but haven't replaced it yet. Still using the Honeywell. I didn't think to see if was able to be calibrated somehow. Definitely will look into that in daylight. I don't think those mechanical units are too accurate anyway but in the ball park would beat gross inaccuracy for sure.

I had a drain valve to decide to start leaking about mid winter last year and a drop or two adds up to a bunch of water loss. It iced over but being it was hot it still dripped.. Rigged up a plug on the puppy till this season :)

I had the same problem at first and I had to raise my turn on temp to 150 and turn off at 185°  The high limit is 195° on mine and normal use has never locked it out. An extended power when the genset was out of fuel did lock it out for the first time. I need to replace the door gasket and that probably wouldn't have happened. Weather has been so roller coaster here lately Ive been afraid to take it out of service long enough being the OWB is my only heat source. I could easily replace the terminal block on the electric furnace but the Rockefellers couldn't afford the electric bill it would make here!

Yeah, that's on the blower control and such this is the mechanical thermometer in the front of the unit.
Might be normal but it sure doesn't look like it.  It reads but just doesn't seem right in comparison to my IR unit.
I need to get some better monitoring as soon as I can afford it. Seems like I always get close to doing that then something happens.
Wife broke a couple of toes this time  :-\

Anybody know right off what the length of the thermometer is in these units?
Seems mine is getting inaccurate and the probe length is only close to an inch long and it looks like it has broken somehow.
Just wondered on the length before I order a replacement and it end up being a stubby little critter like I already have.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Electric bill

Got up to a cold outside wind blowing and needing to get out and skin a couple deer. Procrastinating, and opened my electric bill for last month:$88.52. House and shop. Pay more for just about everything else. Wish I could hook up my medical bills to this furnace. Even pay more for phone.

I hear you on the medical bills!  Mine was $130 this month but none of that included the boiler. It'll go up to beat the band in December due to Christmas, never fails!  Doesn't matter what I do it always does somehow. These new smart meters don't miss a watt of electricity where as the old style meters started somewhere around 7-10 watts I believe. They are pushing hard even here for the EMI meters. They probably skin us worse :)

Gonna have to scrounge up some wood afterwhile :(  Running lower than I'd like and we're in for a while for it warms back up at night after tomorrow.

I totally understand what you mean on the cheaper. With things as they are we all have to save what we can when we can.
We have a lot of problems here with power outages here in the mountains. There is a 3PH circuit feeding the area but that steps down to 34KV 2PH and we are close the tail end with a step down from 34KV to 7200 V. Usually ours just locks out closest recloser but they have switched to the NOVA solid-state units from the old OCR's and we don't get those 2 extra chances at a lock anymore LOL!  Seems like a possum can fart close a pole here and we have an outage it seems :bash:   Got a generator tha will run everything but I keep forgetting to fill up the gas tank :)

Probably a switching power supply. They don't respond too well to dirty power. Did you have any other damage from this power glitch?
It makes me wonder if there was a neutral lost somewhere in the shuffle.   Anyway glad you had a backup till you could get the part!

Thanks for the good info!  I had never used well water until moving here so I am inexperienced in it's possibilities. The treatment I use claims to meet all manufacturer specs and protects against rust, corrosion, and scale so it ought to be good. I drained the system earlier in the summer and was dry for a month or two and when flushed and refilled the flush water was clear and the water drained earlier looked good too.  It was fairly rusty last year after sitting empty all summer and being transported 50 miles but fortunately, it was only rusty once.

Your water sounds a lot like mine.

There's bound to be one but I can't recall right off. Ranco and Honeywell both make strap on Aquastats where you could come up with a GO.NOGO setup using different setpoints but would probably be pricey.  Might could strap a thermocouple from one of those wireless BBQ grill monitors if you're able to access brass or copper where you want to take your measurements. I have strapped sensors to PEX but even using a heat transfer compound the reading is quite a bit off from actual because PEX is a good insulator which is good for us in the long run.

Hope this might help!

How're things going for those that use plain well water for fills?   The reason I am asking is originally mine was filled from a municipal water source but here all I have available is well water or creek water if I use a long hose and a pump  ;D

I am not sure of the actual hardness of my well's water but unfortunately, I do know the iron content is a bit high because bathroom cleaning is almost non stop if I want to keep it spotless.  I use good quality treatment and normally over-treat according to the label. I do this because of my thoughts on my water.  I try to drain and flush every year but noticed I should have plumbed in previsions to backflush the system entirely but considering as that section was done after dark in 20° weather I was lucky it got what it has  ;D

Just want to keep this OWB running as long as possible because I would have to freeze otherwise because the electric heat is IMPOSSIBLE.
I would get a Christmas card from AEP though as they would likely consider me an industrial customer.

Nice looking stove!  How well does it burn with natural draft versus induced draft?

You guys are giving me some ideas!  Gonna have to get me another welder and see what I can come up with.
Advanced electronic controls with me but the welding might take a bit to get back into as I haven't done any for maybe 15 years ;D

One thing with this stove is the load times are cut in half I bet  8)
