Outdoor Air vent to furnace during heating months with OWB
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:37:04 PM »

I have a skuttle makeup air device hooked to my basement furnace return plenum that brings fresh air into the home when the blower comes on. My question is if this should remain operating in cold winter weather or should I close it off. I could see it causing the OWB to use a little more wood since ice cold air will be moving thru my plenum exchanger. What does everyone else do about the fresh outdoor air duct?

What's more important?  Your family's health or a few pieces of wood!?

Fresh air coming into the home is very important.  Many modern day hvac systems have a rather large, 6" duct that leads to the outside to bring in fresh air.

a god havac place can sell you an 'air to air exchanger" built to do exactly that. many new homes are built so air tight that they use these to bring in fresh cold air and recover a lot of the heat from the exausting stale warm air
