Probably another dumb question???
« on: October 23, 2013, 08:07:25 PM »

Chimney caps. The positives and negatives on a conventional OWB. Is it just me or does a stove recover faster without the cap on? Does a stove heat up faster with the cap on giving a restriction of draft but capturing less heat loss out the open chimney? I would like to hear what others thoughts are on this? Thanks again

i would think you would not need one on a gasser and on a conventional i think you are heading for trouble. it will be plugged up with creosete before long so bad you wont be getting any heat from teh stove at all. i have seen one guy  put his stove in a shed and use a cap with double wall stainless (liek you buy at lowes or home depot) and he had a big chiney fire in there so bad it burnt the sides out of his  pipes and he had a small fire in his attic

i have also seen on so plugged up the cap had to be destroyed to get it out
maybe others have seen better results with them but i would not recomend them

I have a wide open cap, no screens just a 4in gap to cap with a ring around it and have had no problems in the 2 years its been up there.  I like not having to cover it with a bucket, search the topic it has come up before.

Wood Doctor had the best one I ever used, kept out the downcrafts and rain with very little restriction, we do not supply them and I really don't like them, go with what the dealer suggests as the manufacturer sets the draft, if they supply it then by all means use it. The chimney cap does cause some restriction and they may want that restriction for more efficiency.

My manufacturer recommends not installing one due to back pressure.

Hes said if you must install one just make it. His recommendation would
be in bend a few pieces of stainless and use a pipe 2" larger in diameter than
your flue pipe, pop rivit it together. Make sure the larger pipe is atleast 2' longer
than your flue pipe.

My father used this method at his work (Maintenance Engineer) but the pipe was
alot larger than what we deal with. He said it worked perfect.

I hate chimney caps with a passion. The tight ones get clogged and the rest often drip creosote back down on the stove.

I have a couple of sections of 8'' stainless on mine, and I took a 3rd piece cut in 1/2 and riveted it over the opening, facing into the prevailing wind, looks like a tee up there with about a 4'' opening above the pipe. works well enough, does collect a little creosote, but not a problem.

Depends on how high the pipe is. Mine is ten feet above the owb

My chimney is 12' tall, and I use a cap (I'm not crawling up there twice a year with a bucket).  Wide open, with no screen.  So far, no dripping on the cap, pipe, or stove, and it stays pretty clean, so I have no issues with it.

I've got $10K invested in this stove - keeping rain out of that pipe is worth the "hassle" of a cap, to me.

How long does it take to put a bucket on a pipe?
takes 2 mins and I'm 19ft up.. All I do is use at 8 foot ladder with a painters pole that extends to 12 ft.. Put the bucket at the end of the pole.. Raise it up.. Put the bucket on top of the stack.. Pretty simple

How about how dag gone goofy it looks to see a bucket hanging on a stove pipe???

A lot of folks would rather let there stove get wet inside as to look at that

ive never had an issue with a cap

Maybe to you it does.. Doesn't mean the guys that use the bucket feel that way..I doubt they rather let rain get in there stove.. It's called laziness..
