own woods but buy your wood?????
« on: September 11, 2014, 04:14:37 AM »

Wondering if anyone on this site owns wooded property but due to time in their life ends up buying wood by the semi load? I am having to this year since I am mister mom for my 2yr old while my wife attends the busy ass nursing school. I already know I am the odd duck but who else buys wood when they already own wooded to cut from?

If the price is fair, then it may save a lot of time.  When you get along in years one may find it a lot saver rather dodging widow makers in the woods!!!!!

I do it all the time, the only wood I get from my own property is when I want to clear an area!

Between what we own and rent I always have wood that needs cut. Trees that fall in the fields, dead or dying trees in the fence rows, storm or lightning damaged trees in the woods, and the emerald ash borer ensures that I have wood to cut, but like pointed out, I may not always have time. If a load goes cheap enough at the hay auction I'll buy a pick up load or two thru the winter.

I've done this both ways.

I hate to say it but I like buying. I know free wood is better but it takes a LOOOONG time to collect throughout the year.

Can't hardly buy a pickup load around here for what you're paying for a cord. Of course you still have to cut and split, but still ain't a bad price.

To All,

My neighbor is a tree trimmer, I let him use my splitter and he brings me wood. Its a win win deal. :D

Check out the tree trimmers in your area, you never know!

I have bought a 12 cord load each of the last 3 years.  I have 80 acres of woods and cut a little to supplement the 12 plus cords I need for the winter.  I get a load of hardwood delivered for $780.00 (12 cord) and for that price it's hard to beat.  Between working full time, running a farm and raising 3 young boys my time is very limited right now.

I have enough firewood to last me a lifetime, but bought 10 cord CSD this year. I also had a guy cut some field pine that wasn't going to be anything. I traded that for 8 cord of hardwood. My three year plan is coming together.

Yes, buying wood is ok.  The logger around me needed some cash and had some "JUNK" ash and misc, that the mill would not take.  So I get then relatively cheap, I mean cheaper than me going out into the woods myself
