Very noisy
« on: February 12, 2016, 04:16:02 AM »

I have a forced air Owb and when the draft fan kicks on and the fire starts to blaze up the draft flap starts making a clapping noise . It's pretty loud and I know my neighbors can hear it well. Is there anything I can do to prevent this. It's seems it's pulling air so hard it closes the flap and then opens right back up only in fast motion. I called the company and he the tech said to close the air flow door a little however it does not prevent it from doing it. Once the fire gets very hot and the smoke stops it quits the clapping. Maybe this is normal, hoping you guys can help me.

Going by what you are describing, it sounds as if the coal bed is flashing a new load of wood and the fire can't get enough air for good combustion. How about trying to stack your wood tighter, same amount or less but stacked tighter, this should slow the burn and my thought is that the flapper noise will cease

Should I be stacking it as close to the door as possible? I've always stacked it just inside the door as close as I can without the door hitting the wood.

Sounds like your getting incomplete gas burn. It backdrafts when the wood gas partially ignites.

Stacking wood tighter should slow gas release and using bigger wood will slow gas release.

My boiler is not a gasifier. When I put it in I knew it was larger than I needed, 8000 sq ft capibility and I have around 5000. The fire box is huge ( 36x36x48) and you can't really Fill it up full, if you do you get a lot of unburned charcoal chunks. I'm afraid all that clinging and clanging will wear out that draft door and the flap will eventually not seal properly. Maybe I'm a worry wart. Also the noise my neighbors have to put up with. My mailbox is 150 yards from the house and I hear it loud and clear when I get the mail. I will try tight in up the stack inside.

Could the solenoid be going bad? It take quite a bit of force on mine to pull the flap shut when it is running.

Mine has no solenoid. It's just gravity that closes it as well as draft .the fan air opens it.
