General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / The new plan
« on: February 10, 2018, 10:10:56 PM »
OK This summer the plan is to install ultra fins in the floor under my house and hook it into the wood boiler. I have been having problems with ultra clac. from ultra fin on figuring out how many fins I need. It's a double wide 28 x 56 built in 1997 with 2x8 floor joists 16 on center. Homark is the brand. My heat load near as I can figure is 600 to 700 gals. of propane a year to heat it to 70 degrees in North Dakota. I will be running 4 loops no longer then 300 ft each and the sub floor is 3/4 in. thick. How many fins do I need and what would be a good temp to run through them? 1/2 carpet 1/2 vinyl flooring. Will be doing DHW first with a flat plate and then the floor heat. Re Insulating the area under the ultra fins and then Tyvek the underside. Any thoughts on how to do this are appreciated. Thanks Ray

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / water loss problem
« on: December 04, 2017, 03:02:49 PM »
Ok I have been checking the water level in my (new to me) Heatmor and it was going down when I had the pump running and just circulating water from the shop to the boiler (no fire yet). No signs of leaks at the boiler or inside the shop. I was losing a 1/2 an inch every 24 hrs (in the boiler). After two days of running on low I shut off the pump and closed the valves at the boiler and the water stopped going down. I checked it for two more days and the water level remained the same. I have brand new al pex lines in insulated pipes that are sealed together in the ground. No splices just one line up and one line back. The bladder valve has been closed for all of this. Could I have a leak in the underground lines or could it be just getting rid of air in the system? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / The plan
« on: August 27, 2017, 11:12:16 AM »
The plan is 75 ft to the house with 1in id pipe then into an 18 x 18 water to air exchanger with two 90 deg fittings. No DHW. The shop is a 50 ft run with 1 in id pipe and two 90 deg into the building then into a 20 plate water to water exchanger for my water floor heat. I believe I will need a mixing valve to get the water down to 120 deg for the floor heat. Is this correct? The pumps I would like to use for both are Armstrong 20 20 CI. I will be running antifreeze because of long days at work sometimes. If I did my math correctly this should work or did I miss something? Additional info the shop is 1200sq ft well insulated and the house is 1550 sq ft and well insulated also. Propane usage is 600 to 700 gals a year and the shop runs close to the same. Any inputs would be great as I want to get this right the fist time. Thanks Ray

Plumbing / ECM pumps vs 3 speed pumps
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:56:47 PM »
Has anyone swapped out their single or 3 speed pumps for an ECM pump? Was there any savings in elec. costs? If so was it cost effective to make the swap? Looking at pumps for my system and need opinions.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water capacity question
« on: May 20, 2017, 06:38:18 PM »
I've searched and did not come up with an answer (maybe wrong keywords) but I was wondering why woodmaster runs about 1/2 the water capacity then a comparable sized boiler (square footage wise)? What is the idea behind less water storage and is there any benefits or draw backs to doing this? I know they have some that run comparable capacity but I have seen alot that are less. Thanks

Heatmor / Heatmor question
« on: February 20, 2017, 07:45:14 PM »
Hi, I am looking at a used Heatmor SS OWB and the seller cannot find a model number on it. Is there a certain location for the model number? Can it be determined by the size of the firebox? It is approx. 15 yrs old and not used the last 5 years. I would like to know it's size to see if it fits my needs. Also is there any thing to look for when it comes to lack of proper use? This is my first post but I've been lurking here for months. Alot of useful info. Thanks for the help. Ray
