Central Boiler / Re: Chimney fire the other night on our 5036
« on: March 02, 2013, 07:28:37 PM »
I have done the same thing a couple of times to my 5036. If I load to many small dry pieces it will shoot flames right under the back baffle and up the stack. This is one more reason I like nice big rounds when ever possible.

Fire Wood / Re: dose any one burn slabs.
« on: February 24, 2013, 07:19:36 AM »
$50 for less than a cord of slab wood seems high to me if you have to pick it up. I have seen guys talking about $100 a cord for logs delivered. That is a lot more wood and less bark. It might make a difference if they are all nice heavy slabs but much of what comes out of our mill is more than half bark.

Looks like cherry to me. Yes three year old cherry tops would have some rot. The heart of a big log would still be good but the small stuff can go quick.

Oh I know, it's just hard to convince folks to buy double wall stainless sometime..  Not cheap lol but does last

If there was a stove out there that could get away with single wall it would be hardy, they have high exhaust temps and often have flames coming out the top

Twice this season I have loaded my Cb5036 with a bit too much small dry wood and had a torch out the stack. I guess I will not bother checking for creosote build up for a while.

Taylor / Re: good price ?
« on: December 28, 2012, 07:23:08 PM »
My wife's grandfather sold and installed Taylor in Indiana before he passed away about eight years ago. I have been around quite a few as some of the family and neighbors have them. I have not been at all impressed by these boilers. I do not like all of the exhaust tubes that have to be cleaned. I had one family member who had them clog so bad he had to build power drill attachments to ream them out. Also because of these tubes they will not naturally draft. I like the idea of a fan to ignite a fire but I feel they blow btus out the stack. I know you only asked for opinion on price. Look around for a Central Boiler dealer. There are other brands that are spoken highly of on this forum also.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: emptying ashes
« on: November 24, 2012, 06:15:54 PM »
I have burning since the end of September and have not taken out any ashes yet. I do stir them almost daily to keep them from developing any wet spots from condensation. Once it gets cold I will still go at least a month before taking out any ash.

I use a 10 plate and my water is 140 at the tap. Definitely overkill. Though I am a fan of overkill.

Fire Wood / Re: Is bigger better?
« on: October 19, 2012, 02:58:25 PM »
I heated with a small indoor wood furnace for 6 seasons and now in our new house I have a OWB. I am a firm believer that I have always gotten better burn times with bigger pieces. Sometimes I will halve big rounds or split a little sliver off the side of small rounds to help it dry.

Central Boiler / Re: 6048 Settings ??

My 5036 came from the factory set to a ten degree swing. If I am set at 170 it will open at 160 and off at 170.

You can plumb directly through your baseboard heaters. You can use a zone valve or a separate pump

I will suggest the easiest and the best but it isn't the cheapest. Call around to some spray foam installers and see what they would charge for x square feet if they are close by. I would not hazard a guess but it wouldn't hurt to ask. If you can afford it you will not regret using it.

Plumbing / Re: Installed new Plate exchanger and have questions
« on: October 10, 2012, 05:13:27 PM »
I am using a 5x12 ten plate off a taco 0011 pump dumping in to my water heater. Boiler is at 170 and my water is over 140 at the tap even after not being used all day. I do have mine plumbed with water flowing in opposite directions.

My dealer stocks the individual chemicals so you may not have to buy a whole kit. Also my dealer will test my sample for free so I could see if my chemicals were bad. It would be worth a call if your dealer is local.

Plumbing / Re: Getting ready to plumb: Feed & return question
« on: October 05, 2012, 08:04:52 AM »
Mine calls for the upper nipples to be used as the outlets but if I am running the pump 24/7 so I doubt there is a lot of temperature variation in the tank. I do like to idea of using gravity to assist the pump.

Plumbing / Re: Plumbed Wrong?

I have been considering adding a filter to mine as well. I am glad to see a little discussion on the subject. As for that laundry list, I didn't see anything on there you won't need eventually. Things like pump cartridges and damper solenoids you will be very grateful to have an a shelf some cold night when they go out. Mine is only two years old but I do plan to have a stash of such parts very soon.
