The only time I've seen black smoke is when burning pine especially if it is not well cured. I suppose you could get it if you were burning garbage or old tires.

Usually that is caused by a hot fire and burning off the creosote build up....I'll pack mine with cardboard every so often and it will pour smoke like a choo choo train....just cleansing the stove is the way I see it :)

Coal can make a lot of black smoke. I am slowly figuring out how to burn it without all the smoke.

I have seen it with real dry wood from getting a fire burning super hot when loading and then closing the door smothers the fire and it can't get enough air to burn at the rate it was with the door open.

Your assumption could be right lack of air could cause a smoldering fire. You have any problems getting the stove up to temperature? But black smoke.. hmm green wood or seasoned wood?  I notice a heavy load of green wood on a large fire will create almost a yellowish smoke but not black.  You getting drunk and loading tires in a night? Ha

Last thought, if you are bruning only wood nothing with possible chemicals like treated wood, railroad ties, or oil saturated material it can only be your burning something that this tied to inside your boiler not good

It sounds like your wood is outgassing faster than it can be burned. I would try putting in some wetter wood to slow it down or find a way to get more air over the fire and less under.

I'm a bit confused so is the issue is too dry of spruce?  How often do you have to fill the boiler?  Not many hardwoods available in Alaska?

Birch or spruce, and we also have spruce and birch 😅 seems it wants /needs a bit of over the fire air to burn off more of the gasses in the smoke...
