Title: Logstor bending
Post by: american-pacemaker on July 02, 2014, 08:37:02 AM
I just put my logstor pipe in the trench yesterday and had to leave the last 15' open. The last 15' is 4 1/2 feet deep, couldn't go any deeper cause we hit solid rock. How do you get the end of this giant black anaconda to lay in the trench and stand up straight ?

Put some dirt on it up to where you want it to bend and then work it upwards as you bury it, not a lot of fun to do by yourself, you might want to enlist some help!

Hey Slim, this part is not fun at all. I spent 14 hours finishing the ditch and getting up to that point yesterday in the nice heat
wave that were having here. The building inspector was happy though !!!!!!!!!!!

Switch your gears to "EasyMode" am-pacemaker.  ;)

Ratchet straps!!!   Stand on the Loggstor where you want it to bend.   :)   Backfill around the pipe where necessary to "hold" it where you want it.  You can leave the strap on there if you are willing to sacrifice the $5-$10.  8)

Slim I always have beer !!!!!!!!!! Sloppy that is probably what I will have to do. I was afraid of cracking or breaking the pipe if I forced it to much. I was trying to get it all the way to the bottom of the trench on the end but may not be able to do that.

You will not break Logstor piping (this side shy of repeated runnningit over with a track loader).  It is "normal" to hear the polyurethane foam inside the Logstor "pop" (sound) during the bend.  This is okay (it is just the urethane on th e"stretched side" of the pipe expanding).

I suggest this:  attach the ratchet strap 10 feet or so from where you actually want the Logstor to bend (i.e. where the 90° bend will be) and on the vertical piece sticking up out of the trench.  In tennis shoes, walk on the pipe to the corner where the pipe is to be bent.  Lightly flex your knees in a jumping manner (not true jumping mind you) in order to persuade the Logstor to bend... use more than one person if need be.  Have a helper ratchet the Logstor to appropriate tension (that will hold your bent shape.  Don't step off the Logstor yet!  Have proper backfill dumped along the horizontally-laid pipe in the ditch (need I say "don't bury yourself?!).  Spread and gently compact the fill a foot or  two over that horizontal section in the ditch (this is the "weight" that will hold the Logstor down in the trench in order to preserve your bend; the ratchet strap holds the other end).  Have your helper hold the vertical Logstor sticking up out of the trench in a true vertical position while back fill is deposited on the bend itself and filled enough to hold it in place.  Gently compact and add backfill until you are at finish grade. Hope that helps!

That helps tremendously. I was afraid of doing exactly what you just described. I will do this as soon as the wonderful thunder storms and torrential rain stops here. Thanks

Hey slimjim how much logstor did you say should be sticking up above the concrete ? I poured the concrete yesterday and have
about 5 feet sticking out and don't think the excavator will go high enough to clear that with the boiler.

About 3 feet would be fine, strip it down to about 6-7 inches above the concrete before setting the boiler or expect LOTS of skinned knuckles

If desired you could do the ratchet strap method and just tighten it a little at a time, wait a bit, tighten some more.

Thanks Guys, im going to let the slab cure about 7 days and then we are going to set the boiler. It was kind of exciting to see the slab done after all the trouble we had digging thru all the rock on my property.

Been away from the forum a while, but will soon upload pics of my BL 34/44 install.

To facilitate bending the pipe I used ropes/ straps but also straight hot water from the tap directly around the curve of the pipe. A slow feed at the top of the curve will run downwards and around the lower part of the curve. Give it a good 4 or 5 minutes then walk up the pipe, bounce on it carefully at you can see it start to behave. That black exterior becomes much more flexible.
