Thanks all. I guess if I ever loose power I'll just keep an I on it and let it smolder!  Mine doesn't typically burn hard without the fan on so I think it. Would just smolder for a long time.

Haha, I well aware that you need power. What I was wondering was whether there were any thing specificallyi should do in the event of a power outage if you don't have a generator.

Equipment / chain saw bars
« on: September 23, 2013, 06:32:07 PM »
I have a Husky saw and the original bar (18) was rather narrow and had a narrow tip.  Had the shop put a new bar on for me and they replaced the original with an Oregon that  was wider and had a more rounded tip.   Is there a specific function for each type.   I think I liked the original better, I seem to get a lot of kickback with the more rounded nose.

I might be able to get a pic but i don't know if you would be able to make heads or tails of it.    When i look at it I get a headache.   lol.      I had a professional installer do it and while we were doing it , it made sense to me but now when i look at it I get frustrated cuz i cnat figure it out.     I'll see if i can get a pic in the next couple days.

So, can you think of any concievable reason why, with this setup, my domestic water would be 30-40 degrees colder on some days than it is on other days.    It's not very often, maybe a few times thru the heating season that my water does that. I'll go to use the hot water and it's only 'warm' it might stay like that for a couple days anfg then it's hot again.   Very aggrevating

Explain how they work.    It seem to me water from the boiler enters the house runs thru one side of the plate exchanger and on to whereever it goes from there.   In the mean time domestic hot water runs from the house water inlet thru the other side of the exchanger and into the existing water heater.   Then that water sits in the water heater until you turn the hot water tap on and the water you first get thru the tap is the water that's been sitting for how ever long in the water heater.   So, the domestic water you get  from heating it with the boiler is not consistent in temp. it all depends on how long it's been sitting in the water heater.    The longer it sits without being used the less hot it is.  As you draw water from the water heater more water passes thru the exchanger, heats up as it passes thru and enters the water heater.

This doesn't seem llike it's right to me so please explain to me how it works if this is wrong.                                                                                                                          thanks

Fire Wood / seasoned firewood

I live in midwest Michigan where winters are a mere tease of what they used to be.   My question is ...... will cut firewood  dry throughout the winter months or does the moisture in the wood just freeze until warmer weather?

how long is your burn season?   I  know some of you burn year round for pools and such but how long is your heating season.      I've been firing up about mid october and burn til June 1st here in mid west michigan.

I've been meaning to pull the roof off of mine to see what the insulation situation looks like but I haven't yet.  Maybe next summer.   I did add more to the back panel though.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / water temperatures
« on: December 03, 2012, 03:40:47 PM »
how accurate is the thermometer on your owb?  and does it read right according to the aquastat?

I had a chance today to do some water temp checks and this is what i found.
My aquastat is set at 170 degrees,   watched the boiler til it shut down and the temp on the boiler read 182 degrees.  Now I'm not quite sure what the temp differential on the aquastat is 20 or 30 degrees.  Any ways  when it shut down i drew some water from the drain under the unit and checked it  with a candy thermometer and it read 155 not even close to the 182 that the unit themometer read.    Am i positive that the candy thermometer is accurate?   Not really, but i would assume it is.

So, with that information what would that tell YOU?    What would you're next step be?

With almost 30 degrees difference between the owb reading and the "actual"? temperature , what effect if any would that have on  cycle times and more importantly wood consumption?
