help for a newbie
« on: December 17, 2011, 07:53:50 PM »

couple of questions guys

How does one know when the water is boiling. I built my first fire around 2pm. The fan finally kicked off around 7ish. The t-stat is the cheapie that came on the unit.

I went out around 8 to top off the tank because this is inital start up and i know the pex lines and EX took some of the water. I noticed steam coming from the top off port on the left side of the stove. When I opened the valve, water kinda shot out from the overflow.

Secondly, when I open the stove to load, a lot of smoke comes out. This is even after I turn off the fan via a switch

Thanks in advance!!

Get used to that smoke in your face. Your friends are going to think you changed cologne. To me, it's the smell of almost free money! I have no experience with the Shaver furnace, so I can't help with the other questions. Lots of shaver users here, and I'm sure they'll help ya.

I have a hardy but I always open the ash door first and wait a few seconds to open the load door.

I have only had my water boil one time during the summer but I could tell by the "bubbling"
sound and excessive water/steam coming out the overflow.  As for the smoke,  get used to
it.

Mr. Wink,

Regarding the smoke, there are two ways to resolve this issue, well actually three and Beeman touched on number three.  You could install a switch on the right side of the furnace so that you can shut off the fan, if it is running; the other option to avoid the smoke is to slowly open the ash door first.  The very LAST thing you want to do is to open the firebox door quickly...you can receive a "flash" of fire.

So, to summarize:

1) Fan switch install

2) Open ash door...slowly

3) Open firebox door...slowly

Hope this helps...and believe me Mr. Wink, you are NOT alone in your quest to get the Shaver working as it should.  Wink-wink-nod-nod.   ;)
