Just figured I would ask.

My favorite part is the chimney bypass handle. What a great design that I would never buy a stove without.

Just wondering how much insulation is good enough in the cabinet on a stove where the pump is located? I insulated my lines and sealed some air gaps on the steel siding of the stove but wondering if this is a bad idea not letting the circ pump breath.

Been playing with differential settings and noticed I get door drip at 10 degree diff and not nearly as much at 15 or 20. What's going on here? Burning pretty good seasoned oak and cottonwood.

Not sure if anyone knows what a skuttle is but its simply a 4 or 6 in damper that is mounted on the return plenum of a homes furnace to provide fresh makeup air throughout the house drawing fresh air from the outside. I know mine probably causes me to use more wood since when my blower on the furnace turns on I am mixing indoor 70 degree air with frigid outside air which probably takes quite a bit of heat off my plenum exchanger. Just wondering how many leave their makeup air duct hooked up while using the OWB?

I noticed on my temp gauge in the basement that it is 5 degrees less than the stove gauge after we have a extremely heavy rain. Before the rain I wasn't loosing any heat on the pex. All I can think is the saturated soil may be taking some heat from the lines. I used eze double walled tiled triple wrapped pex and the stove is 65ft from the house.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Is shaver furnaces snake oil?
« on: April 12, 2013, 07:09:40 PM »
Was bored today so I figured I would call shaver and find out about these thick steel fireboxes etc. I found out they have the thickest firebox around and when I asked what temp the average owner operates o was told 150-160. After hearing this I asked how do you stop water corrosion running so cool? I was told the $350 rust buster treatment per 5 gallon takes care of this issue. I hung the phone up somewhat stumped actually and hung the phone up because I had to go into a store. I was told I would be contacted and I was called 2 times in a row after I decide not to answer the phone anymore. So I ask myself and others are these stoves all snake oil or can they be ran at 150-160 without any future issues? Thanks

Really starting to wonder if this rusting out if lower temps are used is true or a bunch of BS. How in the world does a firebox rust if proper boiler treatment levels are used in the water jacket? Im sure lots of people run less than 180 HI and have had a stove for 20 plus years. My stove manufacture manual told me to run 165 with a 15 degree diff and now they just sent out a notice advising 180 with a 15 to 20 diff. I am just very skeptic about the whole rusting out thing at lower temps. If a owner burned straight greenwood at 140 Hi and didn't use any boiler treatment nor does he change his water I could see it but for the guy using proper treatment and using decent wood staying at 160 or 170 HI I just don't see it happening. Thxs

I can't remember who it was on here but I remember they said they used 3 gallons of white vinegar with their fill water and boiler treatment.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / would this work?
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:45:41 AM »
Not that I need to do this but I am wondering since my flapper and fan are setup to where I could unhook the power to the fan but still let air flow through the housing similar to a natural draft. My solenoid drops a metal plate on top of where my fan draws air. I attached a pic of what it looks like. My question is if I have my chimney coming out the top of my stove will I get more air flow unhooking the fan versus keeping the fan hooked up? I would think I will get more airflow unhooking the fan because the fan can't spin as fast as a natural air draft with no restriction.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / stove temps and longevity
« on: February 23, 2013, 02:57:19 PM »
Curious how many on this site keep their water treated but run a lower setting than 180 degrees?  Really trying to figure if these lower temp settings can shorten the life of a stove or if this is all BS. This is for those with nongassers-

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Why CB factory sets at 175-185
« on: February 15, 2013, 05:02:00 PM »
Tech said this:

1. Firebox stays dry and clean including chimney.
2. Very little oxygen present in the water.
3. Eliminates bacteria growth in the water.
4. Overall most efficient.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Low,Med or High pump setting?
« on: January 25, 2013, 11:21:50 AM »
Is it possible to use less wood with a pump on high versus being on med or low? Where do most on this site keep your pumps set at? Figured I would toss this question out and see where everyone stands on these speed settings for efficiency etc. Thanks

Why do some not come with some sort of insulated door? And why the heck wouldn't they insulate a loading door? Can't believe it
