General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Running the pump while away
« on: December 11, 2017, 06:28:25 PM »
After Xmas I'm going to Fla. for 3 months. Last year I left the pump running and switched over to Heat Pump and set the Thermostat @ 50.  I ws thinking about shutting the pump down this year when I switch to HP.  Should I worry about freezing?  The HP is heating the boiler water before the house since the exchange is on top of the furnace.  What do you folks think?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water temp up then down
« on: November 27, 2017, 10:40:16 AM »
I have a CB 5036 and this winter the water temp is all over the place. One time it will be high. Next time it will be low.  Sometimes it is at normal.  Anybody know what would cause this??

I'll be leaving home and CB 5036 for Jan.-Mar.  I plan on leaving the heat pump on set about 50. Should I leave the pumps running even though the fire will burn out? Leaning toward leaving them on.

Central Boiler / Damper door motor buzzing
« on: October 25, 2015, 08:02:10 PM »
Went out Sat am and the damper motor was buzzing loudly when the damper was open. Took the cover off and lubed it but it closed and hasn't opened all weekend when I was around.  Anybody have this happen? What was the remedy?

Central Boiler / Big Trouble with my 5036
« on: January 01, 2014, 09:40:19 PM »
Went out this am to load the boiler and heard water dripping.  Water was running out the back from the flue area.  Water did not register on gauge so I added a good amount and the leak just increased.  This is my second full winter with this CB.  WTF!!  I called my dealer who installed it and of course it's New Years Day so heard nothing.  Hoping for tomorrow am.  There's some bitter cold weather coming in and I don't want to be on heat pump.
Background:  I've been gone for a week. The fire had gone out and the water temp was 55.  The house 58 where I set it.  I cleaned out the ash and built a small fire.  It took over an hour to go up 10 deg.  I kept the fire small (3 logs) and the pump running.  Several hrs later I loaded it for the night when it was finally at 180.
Bad/broken weld at the flue???  Does CB honor their warranties? :'(

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Furnace/Heat won't shut off.
« on: February 07, 2013, 06:22:44 PM »
I don't expect anyone will have an answer to this but furnace won't shut off tonight.  I noticed house getting real warm so checked the thermostat.  Temp was 77 with setting on 69.  So I shut it off at the thermostat.  Just kept running and blowing heat.  I had to shut off the breaker to get it to stop.
My setup has a 3 way thermo valve in the line to cut HW on/off to the furnace xchger.  When the Thermostat calls for heat it opens after a delay to allow HW to the furnace.  It's designed to keep HW from the furnace if the fire goes out when I'm out of town.  Problem is the furnace blows cold air for 1-2 min before the water goes in and then it blows hot air for a very short time.  The house stays at temp so I haven't worried about it.  When I'm home all the time I get tired of it blowing cold air longer than it blows warm so I flipped the switch on the thermo valve to open thinking it would feed hot water to the furnace all the time and the blower would run shorter times.  I did that today..the only thing different that I've done.  I flipped the switch back to auto but nothing changes.
Any ideas??

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Chimney flame
« on: January 24, 2013, 07:56:36 AM »
Last night in the middle of a burn cycle, I opened the door to top it off with wood.  Fire was roaring pretty good and there was a flame just like you see out of a jet fighter afterburner coming out the top of the flue pipe.  No roaring or noise.  Was this creosote burning off??

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Pulled a bonehead move today
« on: December 16, 2012, 08:48:00 PM »
Temp around 50 today so I didn't load my CB 5036 this am to let the chunks of charcoal burn down.  At dark I loaded it with wood.  There didn't seem to be any fire in there so I left the door cracked.....and forgot about it.
Went into the garage, shut the door, turned on the music, cracked a beer and waxed the truck.  About an hour later I closed up and headed to the house.  Heard this strange sound coming from the boiler area.  Water and steam was gushing out the pop-off valve on top and the temp was 212.  I sealed the door, opened the side door, turned on the space heater in the garage, and turned up the thermostat in the house to take some of the heat out.  It took awhile but it started dropping. House and garage sure were warm.  I learned several things:
Thermometer on boiler is acurate.
Pop-off valve works likes it is supposed to.
Don't leave the fricken door open.

System seems ok.  No leaks.  Surprisingly the water level didn't go down very much.
Anybody else boil theirs over?? :bash:

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Infrared temp readings
« on: November 12, 2012, 07:57:04 PM »
Anybody use one of these?  I bought a $30 Infrared temp scanner and I can't get a decent reading.  When I point it at the pex pipe I get no higher than 135.  I have an 85' run of CB's expensive pec pipe and it trying to tell me I have a 40 deg drop from the boiler to the house???  The only place I can get a somewhat accurate reading is shining it on the pump impeller housing.  Everywhere else it's not even close.  The thing may be a cheap pos that just doesn't work.  Can anybody reccomend one that works?  Will they pick up temps on plastic?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Who has a cap or cover on chiminey?
« on: October 28, 2012, 09:07:54 PM »
With all this rain headed our way, how many have caps on their chiminey pipes.  Around here, most are uncapped including mine.  Now it seems like a good idea to have them capped with all this rain.

Central Boiler / Insulation in side door
« on: October 13, 2012, 07:35:32 PM »
I have a piece of 6" insulation covering the pex piping up to the pumps.  I was thinking I should get a bigger piece to cover the pumps also.  But the pumps get pretty hot uncovered so I'm wondering if I should leave them uncovered.  What do you guys do?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Generator fuel type
« on: September 02, 2012, 11:37:35 AM »
I know this is not the right forum but you guys on here are the self sufficient type so I thought I would pose my question here.  I'm looking at standby generators and can't decide between propane or gasolene powered.  I have a 100 gal propane tank for a fireplace insert which I don't use much now that I have a owb.  What are your thoughts on which type of fuel to use.   What are you using?

Central Boiler / Pumps in summer
« on: May 24, 2012, 08:04:49 PM »
Hello all,
My dealer told me to run the pumps all the time, even in the summer when the boiler is shut down.  I don't like the idea of burning 300 watts 24/7.  Tako 009 pumps, one to garage next to boiler and one 85 ft to furnace.hot water.  I haven't been running the one to the garage but plug it in occassionally and it seems fine.  Getting ready to shut down the boiler for the summer and was wondering what other folks have done.  I saw where one guy was going to put timers on his pumps to run them a couple of hrs daily.
5036 installed early spring.
