Title: TYPE of CHAIN SAWS USED
Post by: dmorris on December 17, 2009, 11:57:14 AM
Was just wondering what type of saws do you guys use? The 031AV I use has a 18" bar and was given to me by my dad two years ago when I bought my OWB. I would like to get a new Farm Boss next year and keep the 031AV as a back up!

Husky 345 16" & 18" bars
Huskey 359 20" bar
Dolmar PS-420 16" bar changed to .325 chain in lieu of 3/8 low profile that came on saw
Bought Dolmar for spare saw but after using will probably use 345 for spare.

Craftsman  18" bar       Good saw, it has cut way more wood then I ever thought it would.

McCulloch Pro Mac 610 20" bar      Good 'ol saw. She has been good to me.

Stihl MS 260 w/ 18" bar
Poulon wild thing

I've used the poulon a lot and still is in pretty good shape for a cheap saw; just not very comfortable to use with no vibration damper.   Good backup saw.  I am waiting for it to die so I can get a Stihl MS 361.  I think the 361 is the best all around saw for size, weight & power.

you should keep in mind that stihl has changed there line of saws.  a farm boss during the time period your av was made was a very nice piece.  top quality parts all the way through.  the farm boss today has tons more plastic and if you want to get the equal quality of your 031av you'll need to get a pro model, like a 362, 440, 460, something like that.

My first was a 1986 Husqavarna. It was cheap. When I moved to my current location in 1989 I bought a McCullough. Actually went through two of them (forgot models) and was having trouble looking for parts.

Bought a MS360 in 2005 with 18" bar and wondered why I didn't own one sooner. Goes through oak like butter!

Is buying an older model Stihl better than a new one?  I have an older rebuilt that I think runs circles around my step dads brand new Stihl in the same size.  I have thought about a farm boss but am not so sure I want new.  Maybe on of you dealers or devoted long timers can chime in.

I can literally go 1 tank to two of his when cutting side by side and mine does it quicker per slice
Title: Re: TYPE of CHAIN SAWS USED
Post by: BIGDIESEL20S on October 28, 2011, 06:50:06 AM
Oldchenowth, Its all about preferance on old to new. The problem with the old saws is some parts are no longer avalable, depending on how old. But the old saws will out perform the new ones most of the time. Alot of that is do to the fact the old ones are more broke in and our wonderfull goverment has the new ones very restricted compaired to the older saws or anything for that matter. The good thing about the new one is you will have warrenty on it and the fact that everybody likes new stuff! Also the new ones are alot smoother than most of the older saws, better dampning to kill viberation and better throttle responce. The problem with buying used is if you dont know what to look at before you buy it, you might buy a saw that is on its last season.

That's what I need to build. A YZ125 chain saw like those dudes in competition use.  Open a can of whoopass on 40 cords some Saturday.  1 day and the season worth of wood is done!

I'm in the process of buying a buddies used Joneserd.  I'm not sure what model it is, but he said he used it up until last winter when his recoil handle broke.  He had just bought a newer used saw at that point so he just put it away for the rest of the winter.  Its now at the shop getting a tuneup and the recoil broke.

$100 ain't bad for a first say eh?

I have a 16" Stihl MS270c for the bigger stuff I cut. I've had it for about 7 years now and I've yet to see another comparable saw scream like mine does. My limb saw is a 14" Stihl MS 180c. It's super lightweight and does a good job on the smaller stuff.

My father in law has a couple Husky's and they're not bad either, also a bit cheaper than the Stihls.

I sold my 044 Stihl after 15 years of use. Downsized to a 5105 Dolmar with a 20" bar and love it. Much lighter and handles everything I need to cut for firewood. Tops and butts from logging. A sharp chain is the key to any saw cutting well, as long as the saw runs...

You are so right about keeping chains sharp. One of my friends at work has spent roughly the same amount of time cutting wood this year as I have, but I have nearly twice the amount of wood. We both bought our 310 Stihl's 4 years ago, and he is on his second bar already, and I believe his 4th or 5th chain. I'm on my second chain, but my bar hasn't flipped over, let alone been replaced. Taking a file to the woods is just as important to me as fuel and oil. I have an old 4" vise mounted to a receiver(waist high) that holds my saw for sharpening. I've had it for almost 30 years now. Man, I'm getting old!

Bought a 420 dolmar few months ago to use for limbing, really like it, they are smooth running saws.
I agree a sharp chain makes all the difference. I usually take a spare chain or to with me. Sharpen when i get several that need sharpening.

I use a Husqvarna Rancher 55 20" Bar.

Works great, have owned for almost 2 years. Have cut down, upwards of a 100 trees; maples, oaks, locust, pines.

Have owned sears and other husqvarnas.

This is the best by far.  Highly recommend.

I use the Husky 359 with a 20 in bar. Picking up a 24 in bar today to cut some bigger logs.  It sucks having to cut down both sides of a 2 ft log with a 20 in bar knowing your saw will handle a 2ft bar.

I have always said there is nothing more enjoyable that operating a sharp well running saw  BUT there is also nothing more frustrating than operating a dull poor running saw. :bash:  Keep up on the maintenace especially the chain sharpening.

I haven't used the 353 but I did use the 359 for 3 years and loved it.  It will handle  a 24 in bar and cuts great.  The 562xp is supposed to be replacing the 359 (they're not making them anymore)  I just got my new husky 562xp tuesday.  I havnt had it in the woods yet so we'll see if it's as bad as they say it is.  Supposedly the dealer was at a show and they laid a log down and buried the bar into the grain longways and it never bogged down or anything.  He said thats what sold him on the 562.

go with a dealer that has a good reputation. it helps in getting your equipment repaired.  EVERYTHING breaks.  I just cut all of the trees that have fallen in storms over the last 4 years. Most were leaning against another tree. Dangerous stuff if you don't know what you are doing.  My huskies and husky splitter cut and split and stacked true 4x4x8 foot set on pallets for a total of 68 cords of wood ash and white oak. Not one issue with either chain saw or 22 ton vertical/horizontal splitter.

I bought my Husky 353 in 2004 and it has been trouble free.  It has cut everything from big dead locust, beech, oak and maple.  It is a nice lite saw.  IF I ever decide to upgrade I think I will be looking for a saw in the 70cc range  just because....

I have used McCullach and Homelite in the past on the farm, so no real comparison there.

This was my first REAL saw.

Learn to file, keep extra chains, do what you have to, but stay sharp!

I now also have a Makita 6401 with a 28" bar. Came with a 20" bar used and bought a new 28". Total saw and 2 bars...$275...what a deal!

Was just wondering what type of saws do you guys use? The 031AV I use has a 18" bar and was given to me by my dad two years ago when I bought my OWB. I would like to get a new Farm Boss next year and keep the 031AV as a back up!

Husqavarna  rule  I have a 1981 model 77 (24 inch 18 inch ). Just bought new 2007 353 Heated grips and carb (18 inch ) 6 years ago .  Also have a 1983  44 ( 16 inch ).  Burn 10+ cord a year sense 1981 .  Why buy a saw every 5 years .  I cut all Oak .
Post years of saws used will tell the real story Thats just my opinion.

I paid $810 for my 562xp in Fairbanks, Alaska August 2012. I would never spend that much, but about 1/2 was paid for as a birthday gift from my in-laws! I shopped and shopped. I felt the Husky's were more ergonomic for me, and this 562 though on the large side for continual use in a day however it is quite nimble and light not to mention powerful. When I'm out of shape it gets to be too much but when I'm in the middle of cutting season and my strength returns it's very productive! It's done my firewood flawlessly from 75F down to -45F!

Saw update. I replaced the Stihl 210 with a Dolmar 421a few weeks ago. Great little companion for the 6421. No more Stihl, no more flippy caps. Life is good. 421 has 1hp more, just what the doctor ordered, great little limbing saw. I've actually been using it in bigger wood than I had planned due to the light weight and its abilities. If anyone has been considering a 421, you won't be disappointed.

I'm pretty high on my Stihl 441 with 20" bar but my biggest recommendation is to keep 'em sharp!  That is the key to enjoyable and efficient cutting above all else!

Have two Sachs Dolmar, a 112 and a 120SI. 20 inch bars on both.

Have three Stihls, a 023, a 362 and a 460. 16", 25" and 28" bar. When the 25" bar wears out on the 362 I plan on replacing it with a 20".

Went with the Stihl's as the only place that still services Sachs in our area is slower than molasses. I can fix em myself but usually have bigger fish to fry.

I liked the flippy caps at first, but after a few fill ups unless you blow em off first you tend to get more crud in your tanks. I'm going to start carrying a can of ether or something to spray around the caps before taking them off if a air hose isn't handy.

I keep a 1-inch or so paint brush in my box to dust off around the caps before refills.  Alos takes the big chunks of dust off the air cleaner in a pinch too.  A friend of mine that worked in a repair shop said the most common thing he fixed was either fuel or oil inlet filters from too much crud in the tanks.

Always have a paint brush with me for that exact purpose. Unfortunately, that is the least of my concerns with a flippy cap. They just #### me off all the way around. They are a solution in search of a problem. Aside from the fact that they suck to get locked if you overfill by three drops, they leak, and they fall apart. Now why in the world should a cap be built to fall apart?

Mlappin- I love the 120super and the si. 120si is the one that sold me on the Dollys 20 some years ago. Would love another one some day. Don't know why I ever parted with the first one. Good old saws. I was logging at the time, can't even begin to guess how much wood that saw went through, and NEVER so much as had a hiccup or a burp.

Been using my Stihl 362 for three years now with no problems.  Probably been through about 30 cords of hardwood and 10 of soft. It is about a pound heavier than my dad's 361.  Didn't run it for about two months and it started on the second pull.  Other than that, it's a first pull saw.

To anyone considering a chainsaw here is my 2 cents...go to your Stihl Dealer and ask to try out a 390 and a 441.  Trust me you will opt for spending the extra money on the 441.  I'm not pushing the 441 but learn from my mistakes.  A 290 and 390 are very similar yet a 390 and a 441 are so far apart it's hard to believe.  Just try the difference once if your in the market.

I have been running a Stihl MS310 w/ 20" bar for the last 5 years and love it.  Recently bought a stihl MS201T top handle saw.  That little saw works awesome for cutting up the tops, it's light and is really nice to have your other hand free.  It's also always nice to have a second saw out in the woods in case you get the first one stuck.

Was a nice saw holder, turned it into firewood after the pic. My wife thinks it takes that many saws to cut firewood. When she goes to the bush with me I have to take 3 or 4 saws and when each fuel tank gets empty I just grab another saw, tell her if you run them too long they will over heat and blow up. Told her they don't have a fan or a radiator like a car. I don't think she believes me though.
