Boiler
« on: January 02, 2015, 07:17:13 PM »

How many of you have went away for extended periods of time and just left your boilers unattended with just the pump running. This might seem stupid, but I am just checking my options for going away.

I've gone away for up to nearly 3 days. But, I have a large stove that can hold the amount of wood I need to make it that long. Generally, I like to have someone check in on it once a day if not to load at least to check on things.

Depends on how your system is configured.  I have been away for a week in the dead of winter with no ill effects.  Heat from the oil forced air system back feeds into the boiler's plenum heat exchanger and keeps boiler water at 80 deg F.

Yep, I let my heat pump and water heater keep my boiler from freezing.  Heat exchangers work both ways...

I don't have another source of heat so I've put a little electric heater in the firebox when I've left before.  Temp was around 75 when I got back after a few days.

I just fired up our CB 2300 at the store last week so the pump was on from November and December picked up the heat from the store and stayed 50 degrees

Great read!
I guess the weak link in the whole set-up, is boiler pump failure.
I guess for a long holiday one would drain the system .
Then I guess Rust in the boiler would be the issue.
