That dead ash will stay dry, dense, and solid for a long time. I have a bunch as well and will leave them for next season

Anybody have any concern at all with sap/tar/pitch from burning pine? I've never done so , just curious whether it has any negative effect on the stove. Thanks.

I'm late to this discussion but would it be possible to reduce the power/speed/rpms of the motor running the draft fan? I.e. smaller motor?

That's what I meant was through a private party

And this is federally, every state must comply?  Anyone know more about used stoves?

I haven't been keeping up. When are "standard" wood boilers no longer going to be allowed to buy/use/install? Is it different by state or a federal thing? Am I correct that a guy could still buy a used unit even after the EPA rules go into effect?

I have mine set at 165-175 cut all my pieces smaller than usual and I do not load it up 4-5 pieces on nice bed of coals it goes all day with these temps and there always hot coals when I refill.. Maybe u need a place to dump some heat on mild days

That's what I think as well. I should probably just shut it down now.

Wouldn't the extra draft/air, especially if it is continuous, lead to unwanted or unneeded burning and overheating?

I think I mis-answered that question a bit. I only have one aquastat on my stove. I set it at 180 so the draft fan kicks on when it drops below that. The 195 is what I have the over-limit aquastat set at, which is over on the water line. This is to bleed off heat as you know. That's what I thought you were asking

What temp differential are you running on your aquastat now?

Might try tightening up the temp difference.

I'm at about 180/195.  I have an old Aquatherm so it's a draft fan vs natural draft. Right now I'm burning all dead dry ash and scrub from 1-2" up to about 6" diameter. And it's not that I will go 12 hours or more without heat demand (got down to 32 last night is all), but the small demand will not cause any drop in the aquastat to cause the draft fan to go. I'm not complaining mind you - if this keeps up its almost 6-8 weeks earlier than the last couple years!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Keeping Fire Going
« on: March 08, 2015, 09:04:21 PM »
As we're headed toward spring warmup, anyone else have trouble keeping their fire going? We've had it pretty easy in Minnesota this year and now this week headed for fifties and possibly 60 degrees. We keep the house low sixty range, as that is where we are comfortable. When it warms up like this I turn up the thermostat to 64 but even so, especially on sunny days, the house just doesn't call for enough to keep the fire burning well. Fair amount of creosote buildup, and I find myself leaving the stove door open just to give it enough air to get some coals going for at night when the house will ask for some heat (it's pretty well insulated). Any tips or tricks, short of setting the thermostat even higher?

Jwood, do you care to share the supplier? My dad is over by Moose Lake and I'd like to get him a bunch. Thanks

Hard maple (sugar) is pretty good stuff. It's the soft maple that doesn't work very well. Michael less btu's and burns to ash with no coals.

Heatmor / Re: new heatmor and having huge issues
« on: March 25, 2014, 10:36:04 PM »
I said it early on and I'll say it again. Between the dealer, whoever Mike is, and the company itself, this is probably one of the worst cases of customer care I've seen in awhile. Wrong stove, wrong parts, improper install, lack of training, p-poor response, neglect ... the list goes on. And then for him to make a comment like that. Sure makes a person considering a new stove want to run right out and buy a Heatmor doesn't it?

My Aquatherm has overheated 3 times in the 16 years I've owned it (it's 18 yrs old). First time my son left the ash door open after cleaning. Second time I was away at a trade show in January and it happened to my wife in the middle of the night. That was fun trying to tell her what to do on the phone. Never did determine the cause of that one. The last time was this winter. The drive belt on the HX fan motor broke and wasn't blowing the hot air into the house, so it kept calling for heat and kept the aquastat fan blowing on the fire.

Thankfully the temp relief valve worked each time. And the pump kept working. All 3 times had to shovel out the wood/coals in order to cool it down enough that the relief valve (I keep a spare on hand) would hold so I could fill it again and restart. There's always a reason, just sometimes difficult to diagnose.
