General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Heat loss thru lines and hx
« on: October 19, 2011, 02:29:29 PM »
Just curios to see how much loss in heat I have in my homeade insulated lines. I have 200ft round trip buried lines and 40 plate hx in basement, with no heat load draw I lose about 1deg per hour with circulator running. Does this sound about right? Not that I'm complaining but a friend that is installing a furnace was asking if it's worth buying the good stuff. Also does any one insulate their hx, mines not and throws off a lot of heat. But being in basement I like the residual heat it provides.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / solar water heater
« on: March 04, 2011, 05:06:11 PM »
well as spring is around the corner, its got me thinking about my solar panel idea....never got to it last year....anyway here's the idea. when im done burning wood for the season,in middle or end of april i would use solar to heat water. the panel will be 4x8.using 2x6box,insulated 2''foam panel bottom,on top will be approx 75' of 5/8 copper tubing with alum absortion strips bonded to copper.all painted black under glass panels, panel will be mounted on roof of furnace positioned to face sun..etc  using a small taco 007 circulator to circ water in a loop from tank to panel and return also using temp gauges to monitor temp in /out of panel with ball valve controlling flo rate. maybe some fancy temp switch to turn on circ when panel temp reaches temp? any thoughts ? any experts on the matter?

General Discussion / nice setup
« on: December 21, 2010, 05:36:47 PM »
stopped by a guy i khows house to pick up front end and he showed me his barn, over in side wall he cut in the face of his wood furnace. the remaining 3rd of the furnace was outside.is was trimmed out real nice,i think it was a woodmaster with a smoke by-pass door so it didn't fill the shop with smoke.  he also had a basket cage that held a week or two's worth of wood that he brings in with his bobcat. just thought it was cool....maybe someone else has a set up like this?

Equipment / splitting with excavator
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:57:18 PM »
finishing building thumb for my machine to make it easier to handle logs for mill and firewood .came up with this idea to build a splitter that i can use to split pine logs , 3-4' lenghts  and some hardwood,  since i have tons of non mill quality logs. its basically a 2' wedge on a i beam platform with rolled sides to center log when dropped in then crowd out the stick of machine pushing log thru wedge . it will have a 1'' wire rope that is shackled to transport hitch of machine to i beam preventing it from being pushed away. the weather is going to be in 50s on sat and sunday and i hope to finish. if it works well i will put some pics on site , if it doesn't  i will just be a nother hacker loser.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / coughing wood furnace
« on: February 06, 2010, 06:48:18 PM »
i went out to furnace today to check out why it was smoking more than usual ,opened door to find wood blocking draft on bottom so i moved some wood around and headed inside.while walking away i heard a sound like a roman candle  turned to see a chunk of charred wood shoot out of the chimney! i think i might make a spark screen for top. has this ever happened to anyone?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / air nozzle
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:00:45 PM »
anyone think adding air to top of firebox would help combustion and cut down on smoke?  been thinking of adding this for next season. maybe seperate blower on some kind of timer reset to get fire roaring faster, than shut off after15 minutes leaving primary blower going till end of cycle.

General Discussion / woodstoves...not even close
« on: January 30, 2010, 08:51:25 PM »
i've read on other websites about owb being so uneffiecent ,waste of wood ,more work, have to go out in the cold,by yahoos with there woodstoves. they think they get the same output as a owf . if being uneffiecent is 72 deg in house when its 8 deg outside ,burning junk wood like pine ,nasty hardwood crotchs that cant be split. then yes.     i burned woodstoves in both of my homes and i dont remember it being that warm , maybe in one room and the other rooms 10 deg cooler, and to say you have to go out in cold , i dont remember stocking a seasons worth of wood in my house so i didnt have to go out in the cold either.  i dont miss lugging wood in the house .cleaning ashes and wood bark up . with 2 woodstoves going it would take hours to get house up to temp after it dropped over night. knowing what i know now i would have done this years ago.
