Plumbing / Re: Mounting plate heat exchangers
« on: September 15, 2014, 05:52:45 PM »
It's not gonna matter  but in theory hot water enters the top and cold water enters the bottom  with that being said that's why they  tell you to bring water from owb I on top of plate and exit on bottom then water from inside system enters on bottom and exits on top .

We'll hello  I haven't been to this site in quite sum time and enjoy seing some great builds out there  yours looks great and is coming along  rule of thumb on pex go as big as you can this way you don't have to find a circulator that has to fit in the range of head pressure  and gpm that is created by smaller lines . Alsodoes  your chimney go down in firebox 2/3 rds  didn't see in pictures you want it so the draft won't  suck the heat and smoke out to fast .. Also when it goes deep in box near coal bed it acts like a gasifier . Igniting smoke as it exits

Don't really think they consider that a owb .I believe those are usually in basements as a wood stove / boiler because of the water coil in them .also not insulated and weather tight.could be put in insulated shed and use to heat larger water tank  ,if it is free or cheap it wouldnt hurt to try.

Fire Wood / Re: What percentage to split?
« on: September 11, 2012, 08:05:40 PM »
I don't think you can go wrong here. 7 cords, 1.5 split,1.5small rounds (under5'' ) 1.5 large rounds 1.5 pine or softwood 1.0scrap wood or construction wood, pin slab. The 7cord is just an example if you use more
Divy it up. Colder nites you'll probably load with larger wood ,warmer days less or lighter load

Nice score for a tank like that...more like a steal. Just something to consider if you fired that thing every few days to reheat a 60-80deg differential ,hope you hav the day off from work cause it's going to take 6-8hrs to get that thing up with a roaring fire and a constant supply of wood. Myself I think I would use 2000gal of that tank and use a 3000gal insulated reserve tank.

Sounds like you have some good materials to work with .7' of fire box might be a bit much and not as great as it sounds,I have a 5' firebox and find myself cutting lengths at 3 -4' depending on size of the logs.   Or maybe use a few feet of the box to create a smoke chamber and introduce air for a secondary burn chamber.

"I have a hard time believing that in the 21st century that there are so many people out there actually heating their home with an outdoor furnace 24 hours a day"  I lost it at that point!
does that a hole not have to buy $3.60 gal of oil! lets all freeze so we don't pollute our air ,while plums of smog come from asian mfg .

I had 10 below as well. Coldest one so far this year for me. 25 below  up camp in pittsburg!!

Crossfire - You in NH too?  I know northern NH had it much worse than I did.
yup im over in hillsboro. we have a camp up in pittsburg some of the guys went up riding this weekend and said it was bone chilling last night.
I'll second that ,was up at our camp same weekend and the wood stove was going thru more wood then I had ever seen! Almost to cold to sled and drink beer...well maybe not the beer.

its been discussed many times over, seems if high water table is a issue then the store bought may be a better choice.although my self and many others have had very good results with homemade pex.

that sucks for you. i would try to comply and get them off your back before it cost you lots of $. if i were you i would get the largest insulated water storage tank and have your owb heat that, large enough to be able to store enough btu's for 24 HRS  then start your burning after dark when no nosey f@#k can see the smoke.
