I'm getting ready to dig up my existing pipe and replace it with rehau foam filled pex.  My question is, how deep does it need to be?  I have a lot of rocks and concrete chunks and all kinds of other stuff burried in my yard.  My existing pex is burried about 18 inches.  I was hoping that I could just dig that up and put the new stuff in the same trench so I don't have to worry about hitting any more chunks of concrete by going deeper.  Will this be deep enough?

Plumbing / Logstor fittings
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:40:51 AM »
Does anyone have a link to a site where I can look at Logstor fittings?  I plan on running the logstor into the house and then switching over to 1" pex to save some money.  I just wanted to get a idea on what types of fittings were out there.  Thanks!

Plumbing / Need advice on DHW
« on: March 17, 2014, 10:14:27 AM »
I posted this earlier but it didn't show up...

I recently purchased a Heatmaster 5000e to replace my Hardy H2.  I will be working on my install here and there over this spring and summer.  I want to make sure that I have a system that is done right this time.  I don't heat my DHW with my current setup but I will be adding it with the new one.  I really don't know what the best way to do it would be so I'm hoping you guys could help me out.  I would rather try to have a setup that would allow me to turn my water heater off completely durring the heating months if it is possible.

What is the easiest and cheapest way to achieve that goal?  I'm looking for advice on what my best options would be and what all of you use for your DHW.  Thanks!

Fire Wood / what kind of wood is this?
« on: February 23, 2014, 05:21:45 PM »
Does anyone know what kind of wood this is?  I have been cutting some of it lately to have for next year.  It seems like a decent hard wood.  It's somewhat heavy and splits pretty easy.  Thanks.

General Discussion / Facebook Group
« on: February 11, 2014, 07:59:03 AM »
Would anyone be interested in joining a OWB Facebook group?  For those of you who dont't know how it works, once a Facebook group is created you can either request to be a member of the group or be added by someone.  It would be similar to what we have here but in a Facebook format.  You don't have to be friends with people in the group if you don't want to be.  just a thought.  I am a member of several firearm trading/selling groups here in Illinois and it's pretty nice.  But, everyone will know how ugly you really are   :bag:  I have searched Facebook for similar groups and I don't think there is one.  Let me know if there is any interest and we could get something going.  There would need to be a few admins also.

If you're into guns, check out my brothers duracoat work.  Him and another guy do this stuff together.   He is very talented when it comes to this type of stuff.  Here is their website and Facebook page.  The Facebook page has a lot more pictures of his work on it.

Equipment / Traded a junk lawn mower for a trailer
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:57:21 AM »
Last weekend I traded a junk lawn mower that I probably would have paid someone to take away for a pop up camper trailer that had been converted to a flatbed trailer.  It needs a deck put on it, some paint and some sides and it will be ready to haul some firewood!  I will probably put some reinforcements in the frame when I tear the deck off because it doesn't seem to be real sturdy but it pulls good.  here's some pictures  http://s40.photobucket.com/user/01amercer1988/library/trailer

I finally got my shop hooked up to my H-2 a few weeks ago!  So far everything is working good. I added a Grundfos 15-58 to supply the water through 1” pex to the air handler that I built.
I used a blower motor out of my mom’s old furnace and a 18x18 HX from Brazetek.  I haven’t taken the pump off of the 1st speed yet and it has had no issues at all heating my 36x45 shop with 10ft ceilings.

I used a cheapo Honeywell electric baseboard thermostat and its working great.  It has a swing of about 3 degrees which is perfect for a garage/shop where the temperature doesn’t have to be perfect all the time.   I keep it at 50 unless I’m out there messing around.  I have noticed a big difference in my wood consumption though.   I can't get the photos to upload so here is a link to photobucket.  That's my crazy daughter excited that I finished it.

I added my garage to my system about 3 weeks ago.  The boiler heats the garage with no problems but my burn times have gone downhill big time.  I used to get 12-14 hours easily but I have only been getting about 9-10 lately with the garage added on.  I was wondering if I added a storage tank in my basement with a couple hundred gallons if it would maybe allow be to get a few more hours out of a load?  My system is by no means efficient.  I made my own cheap lines and the house is very drafty.  I built the garage about 4 years ago and it is insulated well.  I'm just looking for any ideas on how to get a couple more hours out of a full load so that I don't have to worry about getting the stove going again in the morning.  Thanks!

Fire Wood / Jackpot!
« on: January 17, 2014, 12:30:05 PM »
A family friend of mine just had 250 trees logged on his property.  I drove out there today over my lunch break to take a look at what he had down on the ground.  Holy smokes!!!! there is wood all over the place out there!  He said whatever is one the ground is free game.  Most of it is Walnut and Cherry and there is some Maple.  I noticed a few big Locust trees down too.  I know what I'm doin this weekend!!!

Does anyone know what's going on with the attachments option on posts?  I have seen others comment about it but when you try to upload a attachment, it says "upload folder is full".  Is this something to do with the server?

Plumbing / Will this rubber hose work?
« on: December 29, 2013, 05:41:55 PM »
I'm trying to find some rubber hose to use on the back of my stove to avoid extra 90's.  Will this hose on the Lowe's website work?  If it will, how should I attach it to the crimp fitting properly?  Thanks!

Electronics / Ordered a new Ranco auquastat and have a question
« on: December 28, 2013, 11:08:15 AM »
I ordered a ranco controller on eBay for $43 (along with the rest of the parts to finally hook my owb up to my garage )  anyway, do I just run the temp probe into the dry well on my Hardy where the other one is? Or is it better to run the wire directly into the water?I figured I would ask since they are set up differently.   The Honeywell has a copper probe that is much bigger in diameter and fills most of the drywell while the ranco is just a small wire.   Suggestions are appreciated!  Thanks!

General Discussion / Muck Boots
« on: December 17, 2013, 12:21:34 PM »
Does anyone else wear Muck Boots?  I have a pair and I love them! They are extremely comfortable and warm.  My wife always makes fun of me because I wear them everywhere we go.  I have been wearing them for filling the stove and when I cut firewood.  Just tuck your jeans in and you can walk through the deep snow without worrying about getting it in your boots

Check em out if you don't already have a pair!
