General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Has anyone received complaints about smoke
« on: January 10, 2010, 11:41:26 AM »
i load mine around 10 oclock pm so when it fires the heaviest smoke cycle is at late enough. i don't load it till the next night, burns real clean after the first cycle. how about adding a 500gal water storage tank? it would cut down on cycle times and increase burn length resulting in cleaner/hotter fire.

after building a furnace, and reading all the post about diff furnaces, i would consider having a welding shop build me one. only because you can over size your material ,insulation, etc. i think water capacity and insulation are the key to efficiency. i really dont think it would cost any more,if you did some work yourself , insulation , shed. i think the payoff would be in the long term.

if you want to save money and have time , build the pex your self. i did for the cost of around $220 . only get 4-5deg heat loss at 100' distance.hx 400k btu flatplate and circ,-plus fittings ,copper etc, im at maybe $1000 and thats high. however i did pay $440 for taco 14oo series pump for constant circ pump from furnace to house to bring my total up. not sure if u get one when u buy a factory built .

after seeing some really cool homemades and gathering parts i decided to start. it first started when i bought a rolled over stainless steel 8000gal water tanker.after slicing and dicing i ended up with all the water storage i wanted.1200gal! a trip to the scrapyard with the leftovers got me $2800 bucks and a nice find, 36'' dia x 3/4'' thick steel pipe and 8'' dia x3/8''wall pipe all 1700lbs of it! after buying everything else to make it happen my out of pocket expence is $1500 . the beast has a 3'x5' firebox ,forced draft blower ,20''x20'' 4'' thick sandfilled door,9.5'x9.5' r79 insulated shed . she gets loaded once per night and cycles every 4 to 5 hrs when temps are 20s and 30s, and 10 plus hrs when 40s and 50s .i'llpost pics when my wife can, cause i can't.. i can thank you guys here for all the great info. it really help with the build.
