how come? what makes the design so bad.seems like quality issues more than design ..just curious not many mfg show how its constructed ,just a few features and shiny siding.

i think you can make some decent stuff ,its not so much the insulation problem as it is a waterproof concern.i have a 2deg loss in 100 ' .not bad for a cost of less than 200$  ,had 6''corragated already.  very sandy and water is no problem.

just make sure you purge tank with a inert gas or this could be your last post..lol

im a big fan of mass storage,my furnace holds 1200 gallons .i believe this makes it more efficient because the fire cycles are longer burning cleaner ,putting more heat out . the off cycles are farther apart so less on the smoky startups, i also believe the larger mass holds temps longer. i have seen the benifits of more water capacity.in early fall i can shut off blower and control when i want it to burn without losing all its temp like a stove with smaller capacity of water. im adding a second air source ..to add to my forced draft.ill let you know now it works out when im done.

the tank in a tank concept is pretty  simple and very effective.exhaust is a area where thier is lots of heat to capture. have you considered running your stack this way..exiting vertical from rear2/3 in box up in to horozontal flu ,this would be a few inches off top of tank ,running all the way thru each side ...front and rear with clean out caps.then their could be a vertical flu ,located toward the front run up and out.you could use 6x6 sq tube making it easier to work with. you could build this like you mentioned with the exception of the vertical exiting flue.to do this you will have to cut a large enough opening in outer tank at top to get access to weld vertical flu at horozontal point.  this would give you somewhere about 5-6' of hot exhaust in water. and if you lowered box in tank to 3'' this could give you some more water area above firebox.with this setup you migh want to use a draft inducer, this would also help when loading ..no smoke roll out.or if you use forced draft you could have that exiting flu come into firebox  with a bypass flap.hope i dont confuse you to bad with all this..lol  you asked for comments!

none insulated outside condensates like a river, i would get some insulated and be done with it.

well looks like that stuff really craped up your stuff!  you could try soaking it in muriatic acid then back flushing it.maybe someone on here has had this problem and has got a known trick.

i cut a piece of 6'' pipe that allows air to pump motor, then stuffed insulation around it so no lost of heat from tank.

dont think that will last very long outside on a wood furnace, what model do you have and how much do you need to extend.

yoder, not specific to any mfg, talking about the steel and its characteristics.if you ever see a warranty claim for a cracked firebox ,bet someone had a boil over from a run away fire. i don't see a benefit of having a ss firebox? have you ever seen a rot hole in a firebox? i only hear of jackets leaking. how about yourself?

i would think that the chamber needs some type of refractary brick and extra oxygen to get it to gassafy. by your measurements those slots equall 16 sq '' not sure if its to small? youll need a fan that puts out a lot of cfm.

i also put a switch in between so i can control fan, like in warmer days you might not want it to fire up and smell smoke. then can turn it on later for reheat.
