I've got a hardy h2 and the damper chain has gotten stuck before and boiled over with no ill effects. I have autofill hooked up though. As long as there was water over the top of the tank I myself wouldnt worry. Your pump might be a different story if it got air trapped in it for a while.

Hmm pump in the basement. I'm an idiot for not thinking of that :). sure would be easier to change in the winter.

Thanks a lot Dave. I just came home, filled the stove for the night and sat down with a bite of supper to read the days events and the first one I see is this thread. I did have the ash pan door open and for the life of me I could not remember closing it. Well then I just had to go and see.
Didn't forget..............this time.lol

LOL. My girlfriend let the dogs out and came outside just after I had went out, she looked at the stove and seen all the steam and what not and her exact words were "Dave! What the F did you do now!" OMG you should have seen her face and heard her voice. I told her I was an idiot and left the ash pan door open. This is the second time I have done it just never to this extent for that amount of time. You would think me having OCD I would double and triple check that stuff. Rookie move I guess...

Did the same for the first OWB I built, not so much of thinking of changing pumps but just didn't have room in the stove to mount one. Place an Autovent in the line coming from the pump at the highest spot and getting em to prime is a piece of cake then.

Dave, it must have been the moon.  I did the same thing the other night, but with my pressurized system in my furnace room, what a mess!!  Went out at 8:30 to bank it off for the night and decided to take the ashes out, did that but left the ash door open a weeee bit, buy 9:15 my wife heard some funny noise coming from the Pex going into the HX and i went to see, and as soon as i heard that I ran out to see what happened.  It was a steam bath in my furnace room, pop-off did its thing but the temp of the boiler was pegged at 260.  as soon as i could see what the problem was I closed the ash door and shut the flap on the combustion motor, and slowly started to add water.

I have noticed no issues so far, other than needing to tighten up all my compression fittings and dielectric unions.

I know NOT to do that again.

That is the reason I never open my ash door unless I am cleaning the ashes out.  Sure I get a really nice whooomp of flame once in a while, but it is fun as long as you are expecting it...

I went out of town a few months back and my brother was taking care of my stove for me.  He accidentally left the ash door open a little bit.  I came home to an empty firebox and a pump that was making a god awful sound.  The stove had boiled over and there wasn't any water going to the pump anymore.  Luckily I just filled it with some water and everything still works great!  Those Taco pumps can really take a beating! I imagine it was running with no water for at least 5 hours.

Mine has over heated before and did not hurt it, my neighbor told me he opened the ash door on his and used a leaf blower to blow air under the fire and it got so hot it blew the vent stack off of it. That stove is over 20 years old and still going.
