Best Stories of 2014
« on: December 02, 2014, 07:26:49 PM »

Thought this would be kind of fun, a thread about why you are thankful for your Outdoor Wood Burner.

Here's mine from today:

We have a walk out basement that opens into our garage, so that is the door we come in and out of most of the time. It was 15 degrees here this morning, so I put in three or four large splits of hardwood when I left for work about 6 am.

My wife brought our son to school and then went back into the house and upstairs (main level and upper level) from about 8 am until about 1 pm.  At that point, she was going to go out again and noticed that she had left the door open since 8 am!  Now mind you, our basement is about 1300 square feet of open space.  She did not notice THAT WHOLE TIME that anything was different in the house.

The kicker is, it hardly used any more wood than I had planned for the day. In fact, I wouldn't even have noticed if she hadn't told me!

Just another reason I love my wood boiler!

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse.. Open system?  No water loss?

I agree with Coolidge, saving money alone makes me feel blessed to own an OWB.

Correct, pit crew, it was the basement door. Stove  door would have been a whole different conversation :-\!

My propane tank is on an automatic fill for the second week of every month starting in September.   Third week in octorber rolls around and because I had forgotten to cancel automatic dispatch the truck showed up to fill the tank.  Our tank is located about 10' from our bathroom window and because of the excess heat we leave some windows cracked open.  I could hear the driver arguing with dispatch that someone had filled the tank and it wasn't him.   He was adamant he had been out in September and the tank was full then.
I opened the back door and apologized for not calling to cancel dispatch.  He asked where we were getting propane and I pointed behind my shop where you could see the vapor trail coming off the stove.  He looked a the stacks of wood and then at me and said "got it..."

My oil tank is on auto fill.  I called the oil supplier to cancel it, that I'd call them when it needed to be filled.  They arrived anyway about month later to top off the tank.  Somehow  ;) the inspection tag on the fill tube outside the house came up missing so they cannot deliver oil.  I have received 3 phone calls in the past 8 months telling me they cannot deliver without the inspection tag on the fill tube and that before they fill my tank, they'll have to inspect the fill tube to the tank to be sure everything is up to spec.  You know, I keep forgetting to call to make that appointment.   ;)  However, I will call them when I feel the oil prices have bottomed out, before they start to rise to stupid levels again.  Roger

Hammersquash,
That story rocks, sounds like you're getting some respect from the propane driver!
