Smoke issue
« on: January 05, 2015, 12:04:16 PM »

Does any one have lot of smoke coming out the load door when filling.  I have tried just cracking the door to let it vent but still get a bunch rolling out at me. Makes it hard to rake and fill.  Only the start of my second month with my unit. Still learning the curve.   Also wondering if stack height makes a difference as I have only have a cap on my unit.

Your going to have smoke come out the door. You can lessen it by loading when there is very little wood left or on the bottom of a burn cycle (just before the aquastat calls for heat). Do the newer hawken's still have the smoke bypass rod? If so open it before you open the door it does help alittle. I would think a section or 2 of insulated pipe would help a lot. There really isn't a lot of natural draft with just the stock chimney and cap.

Yah. It's normal to have a little smoke, unless you have a gasifier with a draft inducer pulling the exhaust out.

I get a lot of smoke when I open the door to my central boiler e-classic 1400 at the tail end of a burn cycle.  I think it's the nature of the beast.  Roger

Make sure the fan is off. But, yah, it's normal. Not fun, but not life threatening.

Try running with the cap off see if it helps the draft
