I put a fan on mine this year(5036) Its like a dif. bolier. I really like it

   Patton.
I put a fan on mine and seems to be too much air.I put a switch on it and drilled 5, 1 " hole across the bottom of the fan housing. That gives it draft when the fan is off. When trying to start wet wood or if im gone too long and come back to a bed of coals, about 14 hours in sub zero weather, then I use the fan for recovery. How far open is your draft door? and what are you see for improvements? less wood and longer burns?

I often burn half and half. Green in back dry in front. Seasoned wood drys up the greener stuff
In back? Do you stack it in sideways? Or do you just put it way back and a second stack in front?

When your out looking for wood dont forget the standing dead. Dead dry pipe burns hot and fast. mix it in.

I picked up 3 truck beds full sunday and have been buring it this week. I still get my 12 hour burn times but it is a little more smokey and you have to use more of it. Like I told the guy that i  got it from. If the boiler will burn it it will produce heat! When it gets cold the next few days I will mix in some split chunks.
what stove you got

ok. Heres my thoughts on ash. Ive heard that the ash insulates the bottom of the fire box and wont allow heat transfer from the fire to the water. Im thinking that heat rises and the ash keep the water hotter. any heating of water is done at the top of the fire box. Ive been on line for a month and took out some ash but didnt have to and just by raking the coals around alot of the ash goes up the stack. The ash in my stove while raking it around looks almost fluid and its as hot as any coals in there.
I make sure to touch every corner of the firebox with a pocker I made. Its 8' piece of 1" steel pipe. The end is cut at a 45 degree angle. welded on a piece of 1"x6"x3/8 flat bar on the 45 angle in the middle of flat bar.also welded a t handle on the other end. works great as a scratcher and can be used to pull back logs and straighten up wood in the firebox.
