;D sorry guys, but I just feel the need to make light of my shaver's little flaws. So while watching my light show Tuesday night...the sparks shooting from the chimney, I got to wondering about the "spark arrester' I "used" to have on the chimney, but removed because it "attracts" creosote fast than i can say Christmas ornaments....
So, how about this...if I cut off that expanded steel that is wrapped and welded onto the cap thingy...it "should" serve two purposes: 1) keep rain out of the flue; 2) keep the sparks within the confines of the furnace and NOT out on the dry leaves in my woods? :thumbup:

That's actually the "spark arrester" part of the cap. My dealer removed the same part out of my cap before installation. I've seen what a cap looks like on my house chimney and it gets very nasty, so I agreed to the dealers suggestion.
Haven't had any issues.

Should be fine lugnut, cut the spark arrester off and just use the cap

Wished I would have cut that darn stuff off before the creosote got to it. I suppose I'll just take a wire brush to it to remove the creosote as none of my friends want to bead blast the stuff in their shop. I don't think it will be too difficult.

I put the spark arrester on mine. I was burning some coal at the time,bad mistake coal soot stopped up screen in no time. along with cresote made a mess. Removed screen and have had no problems at all. You still get a few sparks out ocasionally. But dosent stop up. Cresote will burn off with good hot fire but you will get some sparks when it burns off.
With out screen you have chimney cap, with screen spark arrester.

i got the sparks under control by ajusting the flaper down stil working on the cap was lazy so took trash th stove insted of burn barrel all that was left was a pice of bean can whent to check next day after work nothing but hot coals no can dont know :o

Will be taking the cap out to a sand blaster today. Got caught up with a "honey-do " yesterday. Actually had to drive the wife over to Monroe, WI yesterday. Worst day to be on the road because of the thick fog going to Monroe, but worse coming home because of the fog and darkness.
My sparking situation seems to have calmed down, but I still want to put the cap up there for keeping the moisture out and to keep any stray sparks at bay.
Sounds like everyone else has had success with the removing of the expanded steel...see now this is the type if information Shaver SHOULD have in their manual...."useful" tips or suggestions.

WHEW!!!! Darn good thing I stopped with the cut-off tool and took a long look at the expanded steel between the top and bottom of the Shaver stack. Took the cap to a sand blaster today and got it cleaned up for $8.00. Came home and began cutting. Placed it on the top of the flue and so far I think we're good. Had to leave enough expanded steel to support the top halves.
Come Spring I will re-do that cap and make it more pretty. LOL!! Now it looks "less" cobbled than when I first received it. :D

I could have done that, but I felt getting is bead blasted was a much better way to go. This way it was "clean" as opposed to still being dirty. Besides I wanted the build up of creosote OUT of the stack as well. Finding that the expanded steel was the cause to some of my problems, the ridding of some of it was the cure. I wanted to keep the cap to cut down on the errant sparks that came out of the stack everyone in a while.
