Equipment / My logsplitte build. With pics as i go.
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:23:57 AM »
So I decided to get busy on building a new splitter. The original unit I use was made by my father 25 yrs ago and is still going strong but I am splitting wood for three stoves and need more productivity. I looked at the big names in splitters and just cant spend $6-10k on a unit especially when I am a not running a commercial firewood service. I hope to be able to post pics as I go in hopes to give ideas or get feedback on the build.

Thanks

Sluggo,

I am considering the 10000e for next year and was wondering what your heat load is. The 20000e is a huge stove. Since you have heated with it and are considering the next size up, you might be able to speak to its ability to heat in your present configuration. If you could let me know what the climate has been like there and what fuels you have used as well as the load on the stove.

Thanks

I run 170 - 180 with wood and 177 - 180 with coal.

I also use the maveric et-73. It works well. To get the most accurate reading with the probe located on pex I have placed a layer of foil tape on the pex the length of the probe then a layer of foil tape over the probe. The foil helps to conduct the heat into the probe by increasing the surface area for heat transfer. After the foil tape I use split pipe insulation and then wrap the whole area with foil backed insulation..it appears bulky but works well for me.

Door, I burned coal last year with good results and am located in Ohio as well. If you don't mind me asking,  where did you buy the coal?

I am on my second season with a 400 single flue. I am heating 3000 sf and domestic hot water with it. So far, the stove has performed as described and i am pleased with its operation. Great support from the manufacturer with any questions i have asked. Having said all that, and taking into account that it is only my second season with it, i would purchase another one exactly like it if i had to do it all over again.

jborden3,

I have the hoss 400 sf and love it. This is my first season with it and it performs above my expectations. I am heating 2900 square feet and my dhw with a 20 plate heat exchanger. The firebox is large and the door is nearly the same size as the firebox. This makes loading easy and with the weather we are having here in se ohio i am experiencing 24 hr burns with wood that is fairly wet.  I bought a stove that they rate for 8000 sq ft because i am planning on adding a large pole building in the future. Having said that, the stove does not see alot of load for the large volume of water it holds. Jerry, the manager at their location was very helpful and straightforward. If i had it to do all over again i would buy another hoss. The construction is robust and it is grosely over built. It requires a solid foundation with a dry weight of 3500 lbs and filled with water 6820lbs. I feel that material thickness and proper water chemistry will make it last as long or longer than the competition. Ash removal has not been excessive and it is simple. All things considered i would say that the door is its biggest selling point. If you are located with in a reasonable driving distance i would invite you to see it operate.

I am happy with my Tennessee Outdoor Furnace. It has performed as expected since first fire and is easy to maintain. Since you are not required for an epa qualifying stove, they are an excellent choice. Large fire box, Large loading door, simple design, non proprietary electronics, and 1000 lbs heavier dry weight compared to a similar unit from another manufacturer. They are extremely over built. Lastly, the price is reasonable.

I have my 400 running in south east Ohio and love it. You are more than welcome to take a look at it. I thought Jerry was a very "stand up" fellow and i would do business with him again.

I would agree.

I love my 400 as well. I know it is not cold yet, "lows around 30", but i dont seem to be consuming the ammount of wood that i had expected. I would recommend the hoss line to anyone wanting a simple conventional furnace with a large capacity reserve. When i get 400 gallons of water up to temp 3000 sf of heating load barely puts a dent in it.

Thanks netwerk.

I have had time to plan and i was not forced to rush the install. I got around the restriction in the plenum by sizing the heat exchanger 2.25 x larger than the existing ductwork to eliminate the Bottle neck that i might experience with an exchanger the same size as the duct. I do not notice any loss in flow and the heat at the registers is hot to the point of making vinyl registers sag. I hate to lower the temp at the stove due to possible condensation / corrosion issues so i think i am just going to slow the flow on the multi speed pump.

Yea,

Its charcoal. I wanted to bring the stove up to temp slowly so i started with a small charcoal fire and slowly added split kindling for about 8 hours till up to temp.

Thanks

I am pleased with it. I still have some insulating to do because my utility room is 100 degrees. I need to insulate my lines and the plate exchanger for sure. For now i am heating my attached garage by leaving the door open at the utility room.

Thanks to all who have given such great advice.

I have been reading these posts for several months now and have recently joined. My installation is complete and i thought i would post some pics of the progress. The pictures are in no particular order.

The furnace has had a fire in it for a week now and i love it. It is heating my 3000 sf house and heating my hot water, and man is it hot.

I tried to post my pics directly to the forum but they are too large and i have too many.

Happy Heating

Good Question.

I have had the first fire in mine since installation. I love the stove. Temps are supposed to get up to 80 here by the end of the week with lows in the 50's. Wondering if i should let it go out or feed it till next week. Still very "GREEN" at this.

Thanks.
