Hardy / Fan & Pump
« on: February 15, 2018, 10:21:36 AM »
Thinking about picking up an extra fan and pump.  Some online retailers are quite a bit cheaper than my local deal.  Just wondering if anyone here has purchased theirs online and can give a good recommendation?

Electronics / Thermostat Question
« on: January 26, 2017, 07:39:51 AM »
Hi, I have a White Rodgers 1F78 on my boiler.  It's a programmable thermostat.  It works fine but seems to kick on and off very often (like 5-7 times per hour).  I was reading in the manual that there is a wire I can clip to make it go longer before cycling:

Hydronic (Hot Water or Steam)
Heating Systems
This thermostat is set to operate properly with a forced-air heating
system. If you have a hydronic heating system (a system that
heats with hot water or steam), you must set the thermostat to
operate properly with your system.
The factory default setting is forced air heat. Clipping jumper
W905 on the circuit board will produce a longer heating cycle
which is normally for hot water or steam (hydronic) systems. Both
settings produce a very accurate temperature control and can be
set to your personal preference. As received, the thermostat
cycles the system just under 1˚F. With W905 clipped, the system
cycles at approximately 1.5˚F.

Should I do this or just leave it be?  I would try but there will be no way to reattach after clipping it without soldering it back.

Thanks!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Pump rebuild
« on: December 01, 2016, 10:15:30 AM »
Hey Guys,

A friend of mine had a pump go out of his Hardy H4.  It's a Taco pump.  He was wondering if there are rebuild kits available for them?  He bought a new one but would like to rebuild this one for a backup.

I have no idea but thought I'd ask on here.

Fire Wood / Silver Maple
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:25:42 AM »
I got a bunch of soft silver maple given to me.  It's real heavy and wet since it was alive last week.  Do you mix with hardwood when burning junk?  I don't think it will hurt to just burn as is but thought I would get your thoughts on it.  Thanks!

Fire Wood / help choosing best log splitter
« on: September 03, 2013, 09:33:19 AM »
I have decided to pick up a splitter this year.  I am getting too old (or lazy) to want to split everything by hand.  I have a Fiskars x27 axe and a 15lb monster mull that does pretty good job if the wood is straight.

Any recommendations on ton sizes or brands?  Mind you I don't want to put a fortune in one and not wanting to build one myself.   I will probably just hit a farm store or box store.  I've been watching Craigslist for a year now and never find any that is a good deal.  Same with farm auctions.

I didnt know if i'd be ok with the small cheapy $1000 20-22 ton model for most jobs or would better to spend another $300 or so to get a 25-28 tonish model.

Any thoughts?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Smoke
« on: April 05, 2013, 10:17:14 AM »
Hello all...got a silly question.  I am a week in with my new stove and I love the heat.

However, I am already to the point where I dread loading it in the morning.  No matter what I have tried or waited, I get tons of smoke rolling over me and my coat and clothes stink up the house coming back in.  My neighbor told me he kicks his heat up waits for it to start burning before loading.  I tried that but flames are shooting out like crazy.  Seems kinda dangerous.

Any ideas?

Fire Wood / Ground barrier
« on: March 19, 2013, 07:04:33 AM »
What do you guys use for a ground barrier for your firewood?  Nothing? Junk wood?  tarp?  pallets?  Just getting ideas and seeing what works best.  Thanks.

Hardy / Building
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:57:50 AM »
Did any of you guys build a building around your Hardy?  A friend of mine built a little insulated 8'x14' metal building around his and claims that keeping the wind off the unit helped cut down his wood consumption.  I have seen several other people that put those little cheapo $595 carports around theirs but that would help with the wind.  Do you think it would help protect the unit and prolong its life?

I am getting an H4 soon and wonder if I should pour the pad bigger to allow for a building.  Any thoughts?

HeatMaster / MF5000 questions
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:42:55 AM »
I've been looking at a MF5000.  I have not seen in use.  I've just stopped and looked at them at the dealer a couple of times.  I want to heat about 4000-4500sq feet.

I thought I'd get some other thoughts besides the salesman's.  He only carries the standard series.  He told me that he had too many problems with the "e" series.  Looks like a pretty good unit.  Everyone I know has Hardy's and love them.  They are overpriced in my opinion.

Questions I have:

1.  Does the pump run on demand or 24/7 on these units?

2.  Realistically how long do the pumps last?

3.  Should I get an extension stack with rain cap?  How much extra is something like that? (if you got one)  Looks to me there isn't much of an chimney on these units.

4.  Is Heatmaster the only brand that requires water testing?  Do you have to mail it to Canada?  What is the cost involved and the chemicals?  None of my Hardy friends have to do this.

5.  The thermostat on the side looks flimsy in my opinion.  Is it dependable?  I can't figure out why they don't have a cover over it to keep it out of the elements.

6.  How often do you need to empty the ash pan?  (I know it depends on how long you burn, what kind of wood, ect)  Just wondering if it's an everyday chore.  Do you have issues with embers getting though the rocker grates?

Thanks so much for all your help.  I just want to make a smart decision buying one.
