General Discussion / Re: Memorial Day
« on: May 25, 2015, 12:38:17 PM »
Right back to you Yoter, let's all remember the fallen!
True dat Richard!

Texted my retired USMC brother early this am to thank him for what he's done, as well as thanked a couple nephews for what they are doing!(All Marines)

Yep, I'm a proud brother and uncle!

I have a sneaking suspicion that only the larger companies will immediately comply with the EPA's B.S. anyway.
There are hundreds of small shops across the nation that fabricate conventional OWB's that will continue to build them, regardless of what the EPA dictates, until they get a certified letter in the mail or a knock on their door.

The larger companies, those who currently manufacture "Phase 2" ("Phase 3" boilers by 2020) with will eventually be forced to "turn in" the smaller mom and pop shops for non compliance, which will mean thousands of hard working folks will lose their employment. I wouldn't try to speculate on any time frames for when this will take place, but rest assured it's gonna happen.

It's really too bad we have allowed things to get this far out of hand.

I sometimes find myself wondering if there might be some subtle, or maybe even subliminal message in a good share of your posts Richard! ;) ;)

Both gassers I've owned will "chug" if my wood is:

1) Split too small

2)Too dry

It can be done m1.
You won't have true gasser efficiencies by a long stretch, but you ought to be able to cut your consumption by a quarter or a third.

I did something similar to what Bob did with a pipe in pipe conventional that I built about 5 or 6 years ago.
I ended up burning nearly all smoke, but I couldn't capture all the extra heat.
My infrared thermometer goes up to 900+F degrees and I sometimes couldn't get a reading when shooting a reading down the exhaust.

1898 farmhouse, 3700 sqft( basement to ridge pole).    1100 sqft garage. All at 70 degrees in central Maine, burning half cord a week with anything lower than 10 above in a Optimizer 250

That is phenomenal coolidge! I average going through 1/3 cord a week to heat my 1700 sq.ft. house to 73 and 800 sq.ft. basement to 60 when it's this cold.
A full cord will last about a month during an average winter.
Last year (Oct.- April) we went through about 8 1/2 cords.
Probably wont be far off that mark for this year again!

General Discussion / Re: skid steers
« on: February 14, 2015, 12:48:16 PM »
I would stay away from the smaller Bobcat skid loaders at all costs!!!!
We bought 3 590's last fall and there has been only one(1) week since where we haven't had a mechanic out for warranty issues.
They are a piece of crap!
The oldest one has the fewest hours, as it got a new engine transplant at 52 hours.
It made the dealership it's home for nearly 3 months!
They run a 2 micron fuel filter that plugs in less than 100 hours.(We filter everything coming out of our tanks with a 10 micron) None of our other equipment has issues, so it's definitely not fuel quality.
Lots of electrical issues too.
Everyone in our area who has bought them in the last couple years is fed up with 'em.
Bobcat was bought out by Doosan back in '07 or '08, and production on them began shortly after in S. Korea.
I think the units that are '11 and older and still decent quality.

Quote from Phil Robertson:

"We MUST either convert them or kill them."

I highly doubt we'd be able to convert them.  ;)

You shouldn't have to wait at all.

Let it burn down well, pull the door off, dig gasket out, clean groove, apply bead of high temp silicone in groove, stuff new gasket in, apply a couple drops of silicone where ends meet, and you're done. I used a small piece of wax paper on top of the area where the ends butted together so the silicone wouldn't stick to the frame. You shouldn't be down more than 10 or 15 minutes.

Throw a few splits on top of coals and you are up and gassin'!!!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: 5 wrap pex melting snow
« on: January 29, 2015, 07:41:07 PM »
Just a wild stab in the dark here......

It looks to me like maybe a clamp came loose on either the boiler inlet or outlet and maybe allowed a few gallons of water to make it's way down into the wrap. The melt looks to be worse nearest the boiler.
You did seal the ends properly, right?

I know of one local instance where the boiler end wasn't sealed properly and several gallons ended up in the pex pipe.
It took more than a month to slowly steam itself dry.
No more melted snow now. :-[

Yours doesn't actually look that bad. My old line looked very similar yours from day one.

HeatMaster / Re: Looking for Ideas
« on: January 28, 2015, 08:55:08 PM »
Richard,
You ought to set up an electric clothes dryer using hot air from a water to air heat exchanger. In fact, I'll bet you could come up with a kit to sell to do-it-yourselfers to convert their dryers to dry their wet clothes with water!!
Another great idea that I'd seen one at a show was where a fellow had a 20 plate heat exchanger hooked up to show folks how they could have an endless supply of HOT water.

Make sure that when you put your new gasket in that you thoroughly stuffed it in the corners.
Mine leaked in two corners because I didn't do it right the first time.
I was able to fix mine with some high temp silicone and wax paper.

Hang in there Todd.
You'll not even recognize your 250 when you burn seasoned wood!
Keep the fines out of the nozzle and the refractory area hot and you'll soon be in love with her!

Ontario is a big province, PM me your address and I'll try to make it happen when I head out!

Let me know when that happens! Willie is only 2 hours from me, and he and I have hooked up a few times already and went to the farm show in London Ontario.
I'll buy you both a cheap steak and a warm beer!
