Fire Wood / Re: Wood identification??

Pictures would help.  As already stated, locust is dense.  I'm thinking some kind of elm possibly?  I had some in years past I thought was elm and it had sharp points once the bark fell off which was pretty easy.

Portage & Main / Re: Optimizer 250 / Gassing / Tenting Over Nozzle

I'm in my 7th season with mine and I must be one of the lucky ones.  No matter what I put in it for wood (except for a load of wet wood) it burns it up great.  A lot of what I burn is junk that I produce in processing 130-140 cords of wood to sell.  It's all partial rotten, knarly knotty pieces - some of which can be pretty darn big, short cutoffs, sweet gum I don't want to split, or just pine that I can't sell.  I will add 2 pieces of info here that may or may not help but as already stated a box full of large rounds doesn't do so well.  If I have a big piece of gum - one that barely fits in the door and is 24"-30" in length, I need to pack small wood around it.  Also, as already stated, my unit seems to do best with 2"-3" of coals.
Even though the wood I put in mine is mostly "uglies" it generally is well seasoned.

I've looked at those before and they are a nice looking machine.  Agreed it may be tough buying in the states especially if there's any issues with them.  Does anyone own one?  Only videos I can find are of the guy that builds them running them.  I do like though how he shows it splitting real life wood, not those perfect little knot free pieces most split in their demos.

Yup, I get them too.  I did look at one of their units 6 years ago so I guess that's how they got my email.

Ok maybe I will split the difference and go with 3/4"?  Also, does the 8" in length sound about right?

So what's the correct measurement?

I'm currently trying to figure out a plate to put in place of a nozzle.  I'm looking at half inch stainless steel about 12" wide by 18" long.  My nozzle area is so far gone I can't measure the dimensions for the slot.  I was thinking 2"x8".  Does this sound about right?  Also, what kind of price am I looking at?

Great question Schavis.  I'm not the most industrial guy out there and probably among the least in this forum so I have thought about this idea as well just haven't asked yet.  So from the little feedback so far, it seems like a doable idea.

The smaller the plate the better though?  What kind of thickness is suggested?

Snakes suck and all deserve to die.  No need for stories. :)

I figure heating with oil to a cooler temperature than I have the house now cost me around $3,500 a year.  I sell firewood and everything I burn at home is the junk that I can't sell.  I'm going on year 7 with my boiler which took 3 years to pay off.  I'm looking at around 14k saved so far and my house is toasty warm.  It also saves me hollering at the kids as they stand there in the dead of winter with the door open.

I sell firewood so I burn all of the "junk" I can't sell - partially rotten stuff, big nasty knots I can't split, cutoffs, what little pine I come across, and pretty much any sweetgum I get so I don't have to split it.  Being junk wood, it's such a pain to stack and just soaks up rain water and rots if thrown into a pile so it goes on pallets under a carport - well actually 3 carports linked together.  That is kept at my mom's farm where I process all of the firewood.  I then stack 6 pallets worth at my house right by the boiler and cover it with an old pool liner which works great - never gets holes in it and is heavy enough so the wind doesn't mess with it too bad.  Most of the wood sits at least 2 years before burning.

I have the P&M 250 and love it.  It's the only OWB I've owned so I have nothing to compare it to though.  I am in the same boat as you as I only burn all of the garbage that I can't sell from processing 130+ cords a year.  I have heard of guys with other units needing to use split pieces but I can say, no matter what size or shape I throw it there, it burns it up with no problem.

Shut down and all cleaned out...wishing I hadn't because the house was 62 this morning with rain and high in the 50's outside today.  Would like to be able to take the chill out of the house but oh well.
