I can use the end cap of the propane tank as a door, it would be the full 30" opening.
I can insulate it.
I can make it forced air.

That was kinda what I was thinking, thanks Jackel.

I just have to figure out how I am going to join the two tanks, mount the door, etc.

I was thinking I might add a piece of plate to the front of the tank to help strengthen it.

Is this a good choice for an aquastat?   http://www.pexsupply.com/Hydrolevel-3150-HydroStat-Universal-Temperature-Limit-Low-Water-Cutoff-for-Oil-Boilers

Is forced air better than natural draft? I have a fan that would be perfect, Maybe a bit large, but I already have it.

How far off the bottom is too far? I have it marked to be about 2.5" right now. If I made a trough under the firebox it would be like 6" off the bottom.

I haven't decided on a door design yet, I carefully cut the end cap off my 120 gal tank and I could use that as a door.

I will take pics and post them of my progress tonight.

I have lots of interesting pieces to choose from, I have been planning this for a while. I have a jail cell door that would make a nice grate, just add some expanded steel.

Home Made / A few questions and my build
« on: September 09, 2012, 06:58:54 AM »
I am using a 500 gal tank with a 120 gal propane tank in side it.

Does anyone have any pics of the process of putting the smaller tank inside the big one and building the door opening and the door?

Chimney, is bigger better? I am thinking 6" but I can get 8" and 10". How tall?

Do you use a grate or let the wood sit on the bottom of the burn chamber?

Forced or natural draft?

I am sure I will have more questions, thanks in advance!

Ben

Very nice build, I am currently building one out of a 500 gal and a 120 gal.

Do you have any pics of yours going together?

Thanks Guys, I have been in the planning phase for almost 2 years. I was just waiting for the right(free) pieces for the project.

I will be heating a 2500 sq/ft medium to well insulated house, and a 1600 sq/ft garage w/apartment over it. The garage and appt are medium insulated.

I am good a backyard fabbing and (I think at least) a better than average welder. I think this project will go well.

You guys are a wealth of info, and I have been reading till my eyes hurt.

My questions are:

Do you put something under the back of the fire box for support? How much room under the fire box?

Do you have a hatch in case you ever need to get in side it again? Or do you just weld it up and forget it?

What are recommended tweaks? I see cross over pipes in some fire boxes. Do they help and how much?

I saw one post that suggested running your chimney pipes straight back to a box then mount the main chimney pipe on the box, I like this idea and wondered if anyone had pics of a setup like this.

Thanks in advance.

I am bound and determined to shake the propane monkey off my back, so I have been collecting and reading.

Great site, great info.

I have a 120 gal propane tank, and am getting a 500 gal underground fuel oil tank. My goal is to have it running by next winter.
All input is appreciated, Do you think the 120/500 is a good match? I will post dimensions and pictures as I get them.

Thanks in advance.

Ben
