Aqua-Therm / Re: low water volume and effect on operation

my uncle has a aquatherm and he burns way more wood than he should. Im not bashing aquatherm but out of lets say 20 owb manufacturers there is only 1 that says you dont need much water. I would say aquatherm is out numbered.

Plumbing / Re: underground piping
« on: September 13, 2010, 06:18:42 AM »i purchased and installed insulated pvc pipe made by insulseal, 4- 10' sections with a 45 and 22.5 degree elbows came to about 400 bucks.
its 4" pvc pipe with 2 inches of urethane foam around it with a 6mil poyethylene sleeve to protect the foam. its nice cause you can buy any pipe you want and put it throw the pvc and put up to 4 lines thru it with wire. Im happy with it a little expensive but it seems to be the best in my town, you dont want to half ass it when it comes to your underground piping.
check it out http://insulseal.com/woodfurnaces.html for more info.
i purchased it from altheatsupply.com

rosewood, the back of the firebox is not in water, this boiler is going to be under 10psi so it will alaways b full of water, there are 3 couplings for the main lines on top of the stove in the back and 3 couplings that return the water to the front bottom of the stove. I think im using 2 out of the 3 available. There is a press./temp guage in the front and a temp/relief valve and a honeywell aquastat in the back that will run the solenoid and blower. As far as insulation goes the sides will have 6" at one point b/c it is round but as it continues to round there will be more, and the back has room for 16" and the roof 20", plus there will be 3/4" foil faced foam sheeting which is r5 that will go on the outside of the cage before the metal roofing goes on.

willie, on the other side of the door there is a 5/16 plate that comes out 4 inches and is beefed with angle iron, between the plate and the door i will put some sort of insulation to.

Home Made / building boiler... Trying to heat domestic water also!
« on: May 26, 2010, 07:16:21 PM »
Hey guys im in the process of building a owb and i wanted to have the option of domestic hot water on demand. with my boiler system i have now i have a line from the stove running through my flatplate heat exchanger all the time.
So i was thinking of wrapping the inside of the water jacket with copper pipe but not sure of how much i would need to heat the fresh water coming in from 45* to 150*... 10' 20' 50' ?? and also what size 1/2" ?

i kind of understand does your domestic run through the copper and inside that 24" pipe is your boiler water?
I have a outdoor boiler right know and i run a line from the boiler to my flatplate heat exchanger constantly, but since im building a larger stove i thought why not have the option of having domestic hot water on demand by puting a copper loop in the water jacket.

« on: May 21, 2010, 07:57:20 PM »
what do you guys think is the best i here a lot of good about a closed system... Last longer supposily???
what is the benefit to a open system?? that is what everyone is building it seems like why would you want to add water manually once a week? or even every month??

I am building a boiler with a 36" fire box and a 48" water jacket both 48" long. How long should my copper pipe be for domestic water if i put it in the water jacket that will be at 145* 175*. I was thinking 8'x3/4" what do you guys think? do you think it will keep up?
