OWB to heat Dream maker eclipse 110v
« on: December 06, 2012, 09:31:21 AM »

I have a Earth 305 owb  and a dream maker ecplise 110v 220 gallon hottub. From what i understand it recovers the heat off the pump motor to heat the water.Works great when over fifty outside below that it runs alot  uses around 1100watts running.MY question is how would connect this to my wood boiler considering the pump is how it heats the water.Would i need a different circ pump? Thanks i have it heating my house and water works great hopefully i can add my hottub to leave the boiler on all year.

You would need a heat exchanger  (about $150) and either a 3 way zone valve (about $150) on the boiler line another pump (about $100). The pump is a better option because it won't screw up your existing system at all. Just cut the line and put two tees close together and pump water from one and back into the other. With them close together water will only flow through the hot tub HX when the pump is running.

You may also need to add a thermostat to control the pump if you can't use existing controls on the hot tub. (if you want to unhook the electric heat you could use the wires to the heater to run the pump or valve.

You make it sound easy .Is there a online diagram somewhere .I hooked up my heat exchanger in the house and plate exchanger to water heater no problem. So this cant be that hard im thinking.
Thanks

Good idea i just got finished with a deck to put the tub on so maybe i can build the box under the deck in stead of removing the old pump
alt heating supply has a 1 inch spa install kit comes with aqua stat transformer and some fitting plus tube exhanger .
looks like about 550
which is what i paid for my hot tub used. Will i need two circ pumps?
one to circulate the water throught the heater exchanger when temps drops and another one for jets?

Seems expensive.
What all is in the kit? You can probably do a lot better getting the parts separate. Also, I would do it the way Intheoaks did and not use a zone valve.

A 55K btu shell in tube HX should be plenty big for what you need and they are less than $150 (but an 85K is only $15 extra)

It will probably cost about the same to use a pump instead of zone valve but either will work. If you use a pump instead you won't need a transformer. The SS dry well is the only fitting in the kit that you probably can't get at your local hardware store. The Aquastat is just a Ranco controller that is very common. Many OWBs use them.

So if i do a pump ill do a ranco 120v to run the pump to circulate the water in tub  which will also run jets

now its set up everytime i kick the jets on it heats water which is fine because it heats slowly so the water doesnt get rediculously hot.I wondering with the boiler it will prob make the water much hotter if i kick the pump on manually to run jets the water will get super hot.

You would use a circulator pump on the boiler water that the Ranco turns on and off. It could be setup to turn on the hot tub pump too if you want.

Do i need a stainless steel circ pump?
i see you used a taco circ pump  ,seeing how this will be the only pump for the jets and circulation of warm water
mine is 210 gallon how big of pump do you reccomend? Thanks ive almost figured this out i think.Im gonna use the ranco 120v aqua stat a 55k tube shell heat exchanger and a smallish circ pump and remove my hot tub pump/heater.

Well i ordered the 55k tube shell exchanger from alt heat supply
and a ranco 120v aqua stat just need a circ pump still trying to find one strong enough to circulate water and push jets without being too power hungry

I would use a pump on the boiler side like in the pic. Otherwise the water will get up to 180 in the heat exchanger and migrate out  into the pipes that aren't rated for that temperature. If you can set it up so the existing pump flows through the heat exchanger all the time you could skip adding that pump. If you do keep it there, just wire both of them to the ranco so they come on together.
