Home made old log splitter
« on: December 21, 2014, 06:04:53 PM »

I bought an old home made log splitter built about 20 years ago. I painted it and serviced it. After splitting a whole load of red oak the chain broke it was pretty loose. Im thinking I want to change it unto a v belt pulley style instead. I found a pulley for the engine side with a smooth bore and a keyway with a set screw. THe pump side is splined Im having trouble finding a pulley they will fit that.
I would post a picture but it keeps saying picture is too large.....

A few things you can do, get a measurement of the shaft OD and number of splines then check McMaster Carr and Grainger and see if they have a hub to match. Or find a machinist to turn down your old hub/sprocket to match a weld a hub pulley. What's the ratio between the motor and hydraulic pump? Would it be possible to set it up as a direct drive?

Where you at? I just so happen to have a lathe and have turned a few sprockets down to reuse as a hub for something else.

Post your pictures to Photobucket then link them here.

I checked graineger I forgot about mccmaster. I live near Asheville NC.
I thought about direct drive. The adapter and coupler is almost 100 dollars. Its plenty strong the way it is. The chain being too loose messed up the sprockets its about a 2.5 inch to 6 inch if i had to guess.

Direct drive might be out of the question, some of those older gear pumps weren't rated very fast.

Don't suppose there is any kind of tag left on the pump?

I would buy new sprockets and chain and be good for a bunch more years. The belts would need to be very tight to not slip.

I ended up getting a master link for chain and sliding pump over and drilling out tank mount to tighten chain. Works like a champ. Not bad for 125 dollars and 50 cents for master link and 20 bucks for paint.

Might want to buy a new chunk of chain, if the chain starts to wear it will eat your sprockets then your back to looking for a sprocket with a splined hub. Also invest in some quality chain lube, we like some stuff from Multi-Mist called X-433. It has a mixing ball in it just like a can of spray paint, has graphite and molybdenum in it. Another good bet is any quality name brand chain lube for motorcycle chains like Bell or Lucas. A local agricultural dealer will offer some good chain lube as well, we usually use stuff from AGCO or New Holland and some guys swear by the stuff from John Deere. No matter which stuff you buy run it a bit first to get the chain warm then spray it, a warm chain will pull any lube into the pins and bushings where the most wear occurs. I like to lube em when I'm done with something so it has fresh lube in the chain to prevent any rust from forming.

I have some bell chain lube . I have had several motorcycles over the years. Thanks for the input . If it ever quits raining ill fire it up again.  I have around six cords worth waiting for me.

I hear yah there, it's turning into a sloppy mess here. I have about 20 dead/dying ash trees dropped, been taking the Polaris Ranger into the woods and topping them out, way to muddy to drag em out with the tracked skid steer.
