General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / What temp does water boil in vacuum?
« on: January 25, 2019, 03:08:07 AM »
Got a question for smarter guys than me.

If the outdoor furnace is down a pretty steep hill from the house about 60' what temp will the water at the top of the loop flash to steam? Discussing a possible install with someone and I'm not sure if I've ever pushed it quite that far. Maybe once that I can think of long ago.
I've found tables with inches of mercury, but only went to 29 I think.
I'm thinking separating with a flat plate is a better option, but now I'm curious.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Scum in flat plate
« on: January 17, 2019, 06:19:13 AM »
Hi Guys,
Would love your feedback on an issue I had. Had a flat plate that worked fine for about 8 years transferring into a pressurized cast iron rad system. Customer said it gradually stopped heating well.
Took it apart, found this grey scum on the outlet of the owb side, indoor boiler side is clean.
What is this stuff and how do I get rid of it? I'm guessing it's a bacteria type thing?

Natures Comfort / not insulated?
« on: September 07, 2018, 04:24:37 PM »
Hi Guys,
Hope one of you have the answer I need.
I was asked to check out a busted valve on a unit today. This was on a Nature's Comfort 175 unit.
I am kind of concerned about several things- there's a lot of air leakage around the shaker rod. I don't see a good way to seal it. Ideas? I think it might cause it to boil.
Also there's no insulation between the piping and pump and the outside. And it doesn't appear to be insulated underneath. Maybe I'm missing something? I'm concerned about if there is a power outage. ? I think that's where the busted valve came from.
Trying to figure out how to advise the customer as I haven't dealt with this brand much. Maybe I'm overly concerned.

I'd enjoy seeing some install pictures. I enjoy kicking around new ideas and seeing how you do things.
Thanks.

HeatMaster / Busy Season
« on: July 26, 2018, 04:57:26 PM »
Just letting you folks know who are looking at HeatMaster units- sales are up and lead times are getting longer than we've seen in a while. If you're in the market for a unit I'd speak to your dealer and reserve one. Units are available and production is ramping up, but I don't want to see anyone having to wait.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Worst install pictures
« on: July 11, 2018, 07:53:31 AM »
Ok, so the picture doesn't show much. I didn't want to crawl much closer.
The things we do to hook up a furnace-
Old houses..
the black ABS vertical pipe had come loose from the tee below, creating a "pond" all around..  when the customer flushed it came shooting out.  Looked like it had been like this for quite a while. Had it's own little ecosystem going.
And the breaker panel we needed to get into is just to the right of the toilet.
Be thankful when you have a nice boiler room.  ;D

Food for the HeatMaster GS100. Rescued from the grinder at the sawmill..  :D
Red oak, sycamore, yellow poplar, soft maple, and some I'm not sure. Trying to fill it up to the top by midsummer before installs crank up.
Anybody else have pictures to share?

A customer sent this picture. He has a hot water outlet directly off his flat plate fed by the G200.
Gave me a chuckle.

Plumbing / Any Pex B pipe or fitting failures?
« on: March 21, 2018, 07:33:13 AM »
Hi Guys,

I'd like to hear your experience on this-
I read on another forum where Pex B (crimp rings, regular insert pex fittings) is looked upon as kind of "low grade".  Pex A with expansion fittings is the Pex most installers on there promote. They speak of cheap Pex splitting and separating, leaking fittings, etc.
However I have never seen actual cases posted showing it, usually just second hand info being talked about.

I've have seen pictures of Pex-al-pex separating, but I'm speaking of Pex B specifically.
I have seen acidic water eat out brass pex fittings on domestic water lines (along with anything brass and copper in the house). The PPSU plastic insert Pex fittings seem to stop that issue. I've never seen one of those fail except for an overtightened female adapter.
And I've used miles and miles of Pex B in heating systems with next to no issues. Old fashioned copper crimp rings, insert brass fittings.

Anyway- I'd like to hear your experiences with Pex B.
Thanks.

Regulations / Update Hydronic Heater list?
« on: February 26, 2018, 12:35:47 PM »
Anybody have an idea why the EPA hasn't updated their compliant hydronic heater list.. like since June 2017 ?! How's anybody supposed to know? Why put out a list at all?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Propylene glycol over time
« on: December 21, 2017, 04:59:23 AM »
Wondering what you guys are seeing over time with break-down of propylene glycol in open systems like OWB's use. We use it rarely down here in the mid south so I'm not as experienced with picking up on when it's going bad. I've heard it can turn acidic.
Thanks for any info.

Advanced Electronics / communicating systems
« on: August 09, 2017, 06:47:18 AM »
Wonder if anyone has ideas about how to tie a OWB into a communicating stat/air handler. We had one a while back that we had to purchase a $200+ circuit board from Carrier to convert to conventional 24v signals to be able to shut off the compressor. Wish there was an easier way.
Thanks.

With all the processor discussion I thought you might get a laugh out of Dad's method. It works quite well.
