General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re- Insulating my OWB
« on: July 20, 2018, 09:37:43 AM »
I have been painting my Shaver OWB with "Rust Seal" and then plan to put new insulation on to replace the old stuff.  I am wondering if there is an insulating board I could use on the top, that would be better than the Batt Insulation?

Perhaps an insulating board and then Fiberglass  insulation to lay on top of it.  Does anyone have any ideas?

I used some of that foil wrap [for radiant heat] on the one side last year to cover up the rolled fiberglass insulation.

Thanks in advance for your help, I appreciate it

Pools & Hot Tubs / Plate Exchangers for Swimming Pool / OWB
« on: July 03, 2018, 04:46:26 PM »
I have been heating my pool with my OWB for a number of years now.    Lately I have noticed my OWB is over flowing, I believe my Plate Exchanger has rusted through and now my pool water is ending up at the OWB.  So I will be buying a New Plate Exchanger.

My question is: do I need to purchase a special type of Plate Exchanger?  I believe I saw somewhere where when used with Chlorine Swimming Pool I should use only a specific type of plate exchanger.

Maybe someone has run into this and can advise.

Thanks

Shaver Furnace / A Lesson Learned
« on: October 25, 2017, 07:17:56 PM »
Shaver, I wish I knew then what I know now.  I think we all would have chosen another brand.

I've had some issues and now am left with this forum and George to help out.  I'm in the process of tearing down one side at a time,  I paint what I can with a product called Rust Seal.  It works well.  I then re insulate and I have replaced the tin siding on one side.  Now I hope I can get another year out of it.

Cutting wood is hard enough and now to try to upkeep on a rusting stove, that was never even painted........At least it has a 20 year warranty right?   LOL

If anyone knows of the latest insulation to use, I would appreciate some info.

And if anyone could recommend a good company to replace this stove with....I think Portage and Maine might be my choice for my next one.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Plumbing / Plate Exchanger for Hot Water
« on: November 11, 2015, 07:01:50 PM »
I have a plate exchanger for my domestic hot water.  I've had it in place for about 7 years.  Do you think I should take it out and have it cleaned?  I think I heard about a chemical that can be used to clean it........It seems like it may be restricting water flow.  Thanks in advance for your help.

General Discussion / Sequoia Out Door Wood Boiler
« on: December 31, 2014, 03:46:27 PM »
A friend of mine stopped up today and we began talking about our wood burners...He has a Sequoia Outdoor Wood Burner - the gasification model.....He says he has to fix his fire every other day.  Sometimes when it is cold he will fix it once a day.......I have a Shaver and I am fixing it 3 times a day........

Makes me wonder, If I should have paid the extra money up front..... Now I should say that I am heating 2 houses, one garage and both of our hot water systems, but that really has me wondering??????

Shaver Furnace / Rusted Lid
« on: December 31, 2014, 03:41:16 PM »
I have a Shaver 290 - When I was adding my chemicals I discovered the lid in the back to be rusted..........The clips that hold it in place are bad.  Just wondering if I will need to order a new one or should I improvise.   I currently have a piece of week over the opening because I am getting way too much steaming and condensation.

Thanks,

Shaver Furnace / Shaver Fire Box
« on: November 13, 2014, 06:46:42 PM »
I have used my Shaver 290 now for about 5 years.  It heats both my son's and my house in Western PA.  I go through a lot of wood.  So here is my question:  I have two sets of grates in the furnace.  I am thinking about covering one of the sets of grates to restrict the air flow........I think with only one set of grates towards the front the wood would last longer and would still be amble air flow for the furnace.  Has anyone tried this yet?   Just curious.......
thanks, in advance

General Discussion / clogged chimney
« on: December 29, 2013, 06:36:09 PM »
I have to clean my chimney from time to time. . . . . .does anyone have any tips on how to keep it clean on a regular basis?  I have a 290 shaver, It works great but I think the wood I am using this year is not as seasoned as it should be and that is leaving more creosote in the chimney....
thanks

Plumbing / loose threaded fitting?
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:29:45 PM »
I'm changing out some 3/4 inch valves on the back of my Shaver Furnace and replacing them with 1 inch valves.  I have one of the pipes coming from the furnace that seems to be slightly smaller than the others.  I tried using some extra teflon tape but still had the threaded pipe go in to the elbow too far.  Does anybody know if there is a extra heavy joint compound to make up the difference?

Last year I ran with my fan open almost the whole way, this year I am trying to cut it back to 50 % open and running the water temperature at 180.  Just wondering what other guys are doing.
