Which pump?
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:36:40 AM »

Thought it was time to put a serious effort into spare parts. I figured since my son and I would use the same, having one spare set between us will be sufficient.

I just ordered a solenoid from Grainger. (Done)

My current circulating pump is a Taco 009-F5. $199 from Pex supply. But they also carry the Grundfos Alpha pumps for the same price.

Is this pump the correct one to replace the Taco?

Go to www.altheatsupply.com ..Your pump  009 is $164.99..Its the absolute cheapest that I could find for taco pumps..(ordered a 011 pump for a friend not too long ago) Company is out of CT..Plus they have a catalog of  OWB parts and supplies

Wow. Perfect timing. I almost bought the taco but wanted to try a Grundfos .  I'll buy the grundfos and save my taco as a backup.

You are welcome.  Hope you like it.  I love'em because being on solar it's really stingy on electricity.

Sure, ask away.  It's pretty simple to understand with the instructions.  Basically, it allows you to choose economy, head pressure or flow rate....or it just adjusts to constraints including warm or cold water.

If I did my math right my taco uses 168 watts to operate . The Grundfos uses 5-45 watts once it's adaptive control "learns the system".  Sounds like a no brainier there!

I just might Get our electric use down under 1000 kwh/month yet!

Is wattage measured by the minute?

A KWH is 1000 watt hours. If you run a 100 watt bulb for 10 hours you burn one KWH.

I haven't looked up the rating of a Taco 009 so I don't know if you did the math right but if you were converting from amps it probably isn't. Just get a Kill A Watt and plug it in to see what it is really using.

I run the TACO 24 hours I'm using approximately 4 KwH/Day. (Depending on if I'm actually drawing 168 Watts) That comes to 120 KwH/Month.

If the Grundfos operates at full load of 45 watts that would be a little over 1 KwH/Day or 32.4 KwH/month.

That's another $7.19 that stays in my pocket.... lol

I'll get one of those Kill a watt meters so I can test other items in the house.

I just looked up a 009 and it is rated at 1.4 amps. I am assuming that it how you came up with 168 watts. You can't calculate it that way because it is an inductive load. I would guess it is using closer to 140 watts if it is drawing the rated amps. The watt meter is the only watt to get an accurate wattage.

Thanks for the clarification.  I'll let you know for sure when I get the meter to check it.
