Closing down
« on: September 24, 2014, 03:46:02 PM »

Well I've made my mind up, I'm not going to be a dealer much longer. I really can't see a future selling these new epa approved furnaces. I have yet to see one work as well as a conventional furnace and the prices are insane. Who in their right mind is going to pay $10,000+ for a furnace to only heat one home? It sure is a shame, I've done this for 7 or 8 years and built up a decent business. At least I can continue to share my experience on here with people looking for help.

I am sorry to hear that Yoder.

It is truly disgusting what this government is doing to business as a whole. What is equally disgusting is the ignorance of so many that feel they are some how owed a free ride.....food, health care, housing, heat, cell phone! Who is going to supply tax revenue when business's are regulated out of business?

Right now there is my dad, brother and I all selling and installing Heat Master in the same location and we all stay busy. We don't see there being enough business for 3, I seriously doubt there will be enough for one but that will remain to be seen.
I don't know what other brand would be cheaper than what Heat Master has to offer. Maybe Empyre but its not much difference. Heating costs in the south are not what they are farther north so cost is really going to have an effect on sales going forward probably more than if I was located differently.
I'm in a lucky spot I guess, my wife's business is doing well so I'm not going to starve. I already spend at least a third of my time volunteering in different roles in the community. The rest of my time I guess I will work on expanding the farm.
As I said before I'm not going to starve, lose my house or be begging in the street. On the other hand I can't help being a bit angry as I watch the business I worked so hard on be destroyed by the epa.  :bash:

I don't think I'd get just out yet, as manufacturers get more experience with the gassers they will get better. Anybody remember the nightmares under the hoods of the mid to late 80's cars with all that pollution crap? I almost don't mind working on the wife's Jeep Liberty as it doesn't have 500 miles of vacuum hoses and 3 dozen solenoids like the old cars had.

Sorry to see that you are closing down. I still think Heat Master has a great web site with a cut away of how the boiler works. It might take a couple of more years before the gassers are perfected to where the price might come a little more in line with the older models. Maybe Slim will get you started in a new line.

NOT what I'm looking to do, he has a brand that he likes and a history with them, I simply wanted to explain my history in the industry and attempt to persuade him to stick it out!

Sticking it out with the Heat Master sound like the way I would go if I were a dealer and see what the future brings. Closing down should be the last resort.

Thanks guys and slim I will give you a ring. The bottom line is in my opinion Heat Master is the brand I would want to sell but there just isn't going to be enough work for 3 of us here any more. I'm not going to stay at it struggling along selling 10 or 20 units a year, its just too much work for too little money. Its better if my brother can consolidate everything, at least one of us can stay busy that way.

Seeing these kinds of posts, and working in a coal-powered power plant in today's political climate makes me hate the EPA that much more.  I wish the OWB manufacturers would add a "meat-rack" option to the boilers so they could say they weren't outdoor wood boilers, but barbecue smokers instead.  That's what everyone thinks my homemade one looks like anyway.  People could heat their house with their "barbecue smoker" and avoid the EPA.  But, I'm sure it wouldn't take them long to outlaw barbecue smokers if that were the case.  It's disgusting how much we as a country have allowed our government to control us.
