General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Boiler & Garage Up in Flames
« on: February 28, 2020, 10:12:53 PM »
I'm sorry to hear this as well.  Any clue to what happened?  The stove is a simple design, either the damper got stuck open from debris or the Love Controller went bad.  Sounds like excessive creosote buildup shooting flames out the chimney.  With multiple chimney extensions your more prone to buildup.  Seems a boiler over in second thought would have helped.  I know with my ridgewood  my wife will ask me to burn some of the cardboard we have laying around and it often creates a fireball and sparks from a simple few soda boxes.  Most of my wood is green tho.  Good luck to you.

Fire Wood / First load of pine two cords.
« on: January 24, 2020, 11:37:50 PM »
Man this stuff burns hot, the load consists of big logs, makes it easy to fill the boiler.  Burn time is slightly lower but for the price I'm amazed how well it burns. Beats the hell out of green hardwood this time of year which most delivery guys have.  My backyard is full of pine for the fraction of the costs.  I'm converted.

Reminds me of last year in upstate NY. It started raining in early August and didn't stop until late spring the next year. Tore the bejeezus out of my lawn trying to move wood around.

Are those loads well seasoned and dry? Where I'm at, getting seasoned and dry wood is impossible. You can buy a bunch of green wood from guys who will tell you it's seasoned, though.

Wood delivered is mostly dead ash cut.  Burns really nice but is still a bit green.  I think he is mixing in fresh cut.  You are right, the wood delivery guys tend to all lie about what they have.  I have also noticed lots of smaller rounds and sticks mixed in.  I can understand smaller rounds but small branches?  Some of the rounds are so large I can barely lift them into the boiler, but others are small branches.  I'm starting to question if they use the smaller branches to make the wood delivery look larger

how do I attach my garden hoe to 3/4" EMT ?

The shoveling seemed to work, ground froze over better.  The dump trailer with two cords of wood only sunk in slightly.   8)

This will last me about 20 days, I burn about 1 cord every 10 days.

Here in Michigan we have had so much rain, my clay soil is saturated with moisture.  I have not been able to get a wood delivery for weeks due to the dump trailers sinking and getting stuck.  I think tomorrow is my chance, we are getting down to the single digits tonight, but I have a 4 inch layer of snow insulating the wet and rather warm soil.  I'm so frustrated,  I think my only chance is to shovel the back yard grass to allow it to freeze.  I can only imagine what the farmers are feeling around here with crops sitting in the field.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / I need a good Ash Rake

Does anyone have suggestions on a good ash rake?  I buy cheap garden rakes and I'm lucky to get a month use before they break, normally when trying to pull some larger pieces from the back to the front.

What water treatment are you using?

I think with the right water treatment your probably fine.  I was able to fill 3 years ago with softened water, now that my water softener is broken, I buy distilled water in bulk to top up.  My main worry is clogging the heat exchanger.  After a week my shower is brown, I have extra hard water.  My manufacturer recommends yearly flushes, I don't see the point my water looks just fine.

This may be my issue only, I'm not a big winter fan, but about mid Feburary I hit a wall.  Becomes more of a chore to fill and clean the boiler.  The thought of filling for another 2 months is a struggle mentally.

I'm set to burn 6 cords already by this weekend! Anyone have me beat?  Running a conventional Ridgewood, not a bad unit but dear God does it love to burn wood. 3,000 SQFT farm house.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Question on pump speed
« on: October 26, 2018, 10:08:19 PM »
From reading this forum over a few years, I have always read a faster pump speed means more heat delivered to the home through the exchanger.  I believe I have a small taco pump, it has three setting.  I normally run it on second setting.  Just for fun I turned it down to the first setting and the the air from the ducts seem much warmer.  Maybe it's in my head.  I would like to hear more comments on pump speed and heat delivery through the water to air exchanger.

Has anyone tried modifying the water to air exchanger in their plenum to cool.  Running 60 degree well water through the exchanger would probably work, you would need a discharge area for the water.  Also, when the house calls for cooling it would need a mechanism to turn the water on.

I thought Craig was one off the owners in the past, could be just a another guy same name.  Not bad on wood usage, in cold weather I burn full cord every 10 - 12 days.  How much home are you heating? New construction?
