Countdown Timer
« on: December 01, 2014, 06:07:14 AM »

I installed a countdown timer this year like Slim suggests in conjunction with a low temp aquastat to kill the fan when the wood gets low. It has worked AWESOME! My only issue is that the timer has failed and will sometimes get stuck(after a month of use!!!!!) This is the timer http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westek-12-Hour-In-Wall-Countdown-Timer-White-TMSW12HW/203675431#customer_reviews

As you can see others have the same issue with the timer getting stuck. What brand of timer do you use slim? Should I go to a digital one touch instead of mechanical? The switch has been located on the outside of the boiler inside a weatherproof electrical box with the wires being fed in through a hole I cut in the side of the unit. So the back side stays warm but the outside of the box is cold.

They're expensive as heck but for a reliable timer look for an Omron, I use em all the time around the farm on the grain setup and haven't yet have one fail. A bit more involved to wire though, watch Ebay for a deal.

I used the same timer for my backyard light (the one from the lowe's link).  My girlfriend would always turn on the flood lights when she let the dog out and never turned them back off.  It has been in there for 3 years and still works good, but that is inside the house.

The one that I use and have never had one fail yet comes out of my electrical supply house, Tork A560MW

I used both timers in the links.

I never had luck with the mechanical timer. I would go through (1) per season until
I ordered a digital model from Amazon. They can be picked up at Lowes & Home Depot.
I've never had a problem with the digital version.

The mechanical one would fail every time it got below 30 degrees? Weird but that's what happened.

My father uses one of the more expensive ones from lowes, hes had it for years with no problems.
I believe it's more of an industrial version for site lighting around $80.00 though.

This is the one I use

Well I installed the digital one tonight. We will see how long this one lasts. If this doesn't last I will go to an electrical supply house and by a mechanical 'real one'.
