I would raise your high set temp as well.  I don't burn in the summer, but I still think 165/15 is too low.  That probably contributes to your moisture/creasote issues.

Equipment / Re: Horizontal/Vertical log splitters
« on: July 22, 2016, 11:29:57 AM »
It all depends on your needs.  If you are doing any serious splitting, I wouldn't recommend a 22 ton.  I split 15 cords a year and I run a 27 ton Dirty Hands Tool splitter with the 6.5 horse Kohler.  I wanted to get the 28 ton with the 9 horse Kohler, but I got the 27 at 50% off on a Menards black friday deal.  Couldn't pass that up at all!  Regular price was $1,400.  I got it for $800 with a $100 rebate.

So, I've been running the DHT 27 ton for almost 3 years now.  Not a single issue.  It sips gas to the point that I'm glad I didn't get the 9 horse.  I also have not found a crotchy piece of wood I couldn't split.  I have gotten hung up several times on my cousins 22 ton.

I had my eye on a 28 ton Oregon.  The Oregon is just a SpeeCo with different paint and stickers.  I looked into SpeeCo and the seem like a quility product.  They also make the "Country Tuff" brand at Orescheln Farm and Home.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd be looking at a Timber Wolf or some other comparable commercial quality.  I hate buying big box, but I'm happy with my DHT.   A Kohler engine was a must for me.  I'm not a fan of Briggs and Stratton.

A lot of guys stuff it full of cardboard and lite it.  It will ignite the creosote and burn it all off.

An inch thick??  What kind of wood are you burning?  I've been running a 10,000E for 3 years and I'm oversized and I've not had a creosote problem at all.  I was just going to burn mine off this summer just to see how well this method works.  I barely have a film on mine.

Mr. Slim, that's a great idea!  I have a newer door design, but the puffy insulation does annoy me a bit.  I think I'll pull it out this summer and put in some foam board!!  Great idea!!

I love cutting wood and burning wood.  That being said, if I had natural gas, I probably would make the switch.  Yes, wood is cheaper, but the cost/benefit ratio is higher with gas.  The benefit in reduction in cutting, splitting, stacking, etc., is not worth the smaller price difference in natural gas.  Good luck with your renovation.  I'd think you could get $2,000-$4,000 out of an 11 year old Hardy.  Kinda hard telling with the new market.  Used conventional stoves are probably worth a lot more now that you can't buy them new anymore.

I've spoken with Heatmaster about this video.   There is a ton of half-truths in this video.  Lot's of one-sidedness.  If you'll notice, his comments are disabled as well.  He made a stupid decision and tried to blame Heatmaster.  When they didn't do what he wanted, he made a propaganda video.

I am amazed at how little wood in am burning now the the flapper value closed when the unit is not on load.next year I will burn 1/2 the wood is have this year.
And I just got a score of bodock wood for the next 5+ years. It is also called orsage orange, it burns hot and long. Anyone have experience with this wood? My neighbor loves it more than oak.

Osage Orange, also known as Hedge and Bodark, is the mother of all BTU wood.  When green, it cuts and splits very easily.  When cured and aged, it will dull a chain in 1 cut.  Might even throw sparks.  DO NOT BURN HEDGE IN YOUR HOUSE.  Only burn hedge in an OWB and be careful when loading with the fan on.  Here is a video of my stove burning this stuff and it shows why I say this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6vS5U-k-hQ

I'd KILL for a 5 year supply of Hedge!!  Man on man!!

There are several of us burning coal in our stoves.  Lost of experience as well.  What are the questions?  We're happy to help when we can!

Fire Wood / Re: 290 Farm Boss
« on: January 31, 2016, 06:35:56 PM »
I've been running a 290 for three years now as my only saw. I have a 20" bar on it. I've bucked up some 24" trees, but I'd rather not if it's possible. It does take a while. It's a great all around saw. My next two saws will be a 170-ish for limbing and a 440 for the big stuff. But, even with the two other sizes, I will still likely be running the 290 the most. It's a great saw.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Firing OWB On and Off

What I do is turn off the pumps during the day.  I get a lot of heat bleed in the house and it warms it up too much on those extremely days.  So, I just turn off the pumps.  Late in the evening, I'll turn the pumps back and and the stove will take off right where it left off.  Even if it hasn't cycled in several hours, it will still take off.  Your stove is different than mine, so give it a try.  I don't think you'll need to "fire it up" or "shut it down" during the day.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Instructional Videos

Guys, I just stumbled upon a new series of instructional videos that look great!  This guy really knows what he's talking about!  At least in the pool videos.  That's all I've watched so far.  Anyway, it looks like a new channel with not many views, but I'm sure they'll take off.  Full disclaimer, this is a supplier.  But, just like most of the dealers and suppliers on here, he's got these videos up there for all of us.
