Empyre / Re: How are the Empyre boilers running?
« on: December 26, 2014, 02:40:51 PM »
I've purchased all of my parts through Profab.  The 1st fan I purchased was through my local dealer who is no longer in the business and after using that first backup I purchased another direct from Profab.  I'm trying to order some replacement bricks right now from Profab direct and am having some problems so I'm not sure what's going on there.

I started my Pro 200 for the season in mid Nov and it's been burning great so far.  Heating 3400 ft2 along and DHW with no trouble getting 16 hour burn time if I need it in SE PA.  This is my 4th year with the stove and I've been running at 180 with 10 degree differential.  I've been leaking smoke from the loading door since early last season.  Adjusting the door didn't seem to help.  I may replace the gasket if it gets too bad but not too much of a problem for now.  My blower motor failed for the first time near the end of last season and I had to repair several broken bricks in the center section of the firebox this year which have pretty much been the extent of my problems.  I have had some issues with creosote blockage of the air inlet channel and have learned to clean that really well after each season.  I figured a 3 year payback when I installed it and it feels good this year to be in the green from a financial perspective.

I also had a near miss here in SE PA with trees falling around my furnace but they all missed.  Power was out from Mon-Sat and we just got cable/network back yesterday.  Will not have to travel far for wood for the next several years.

Empyre / Empyre Pro 200 Air Inlet Tube Cleaning
« on: November 08, 2012, 11:20:13 AM »
Just fired up my Empyre Pro 200 for it's 3rd season here in SE PA and had some trouble with blockage of the air inlet tube.  After removing the blower I found that the much of the tube was blocked solid with creosote.  After heating with a torch from the inside of the main burn chamber I was able to get a small electrical fish through the tube which I used to pull in a small piece of chain.  After working for a long time with the chain and not getting very far I gave up and lit the stove.  Seems to be burning fine.

Anyone developed a good method to clean this air tube?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: 1st Burn

My propane tank was just filled last week as I was finishing the plumbing work.  Can't wait for them to return in Spring and realize that the tank is still almost full.  The only propane I should need between now and then will be for my gas range which isn't using much at all.

I anticipating having to buy some wood down the road but even with this I'm still going to save big $.

Will let everyone know how things go.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / 1st Burn
« on: January 09, 2011, 05:15:18 PM »
After several years sitting on the fence about an OWB, and another year+ researching the various units available, I finally lit my Empyre Pro 200/Aspen 175 today for the first time.

Quite a liberating feeling when the forced air furnace in the house came on without the need for the propane burner.  Filled the OWB almost full around 11:30 AM and after 7 hours still have lots of wood remaining in the firebox.

Thanks to those of you on this board, especially main owb and willieG, who provided tips and instruction on how to get this unit installed and running.

Plumbing / Re: water line question

My current furnace is putting out 93000 btu/hour and using this with a 1" line puts me right on the curve for the Taco 014 or under the curve for the Taco 011 using the sizing link.

I'm getting a great price on the 1" Logstor so the difference in price to go up in line size is significant.  How much power does the 014 or 011 draw?  Not sure it's worth upsizing the line when I should be fine on 10 GPM or less.

Plumbing / water line question
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:04:57 PM »
I am in the processing of purchasing my 1st OWB which will likely be an Empyre Pro 200.  I plan to run 1" Logstor between the OWB and the basement with the intent on heating the house through forced air and DHW.  I'm trying to identify the best way to seal the Logstore penetration in my poured concrete foundation wall and was hoping others have already solved this problem.

Also, I am planning to use 1" Logstor based on only 60' between the OWB and the house.  Will this line size be sufficient to heat 3400 ft2 and DHW?

Thanks

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Trying to decide
« on: October 05, 2010, 07:52:47 PM »
After looking at pretty much every OWB manufacturer I have narrowed my search to the Empyre Pro 200 or the Wood Doctor HE5000.  Have seen positive posts for both on the boards but am looking for as much input from others as possible prior to making the purchase.  Plans are to heat a 3400 ft2 10 year old house in SE Pennsylvania with the OWB about 30 ft from the house.  Capacity of both seems similar from what I have been able to find.  The 30 year WD warranty is attractive but I'm concerned about the chimney mounted fan being loud.  The Empyre warranty is only 10 years but the interior mounted fan is likely to be quiet.

Thanks in advance for any input.
