Keep those dampers and flappers clean and tight!
« on: December 11, 2014, 09:53:00 AM »

Hi guys,

I am on my third winter with an Optimizer 250 and have never had a problem with water in the air box.  A few weeks ago the air box started filling with water condensation to the point where it was running out of the box.  I had replaced my door gaskets this fall and so I knew the seals were tight.  I finally figured out that the main blower flapper tube had a very very small piece of gunk baked to the rim and the so the flapper didn't seal completely tight.

So after scraping and sanding the tube rim to get it perfectly smooth I think the problem is resolved.  Fingers crossed!

What glue did you use that will stick to EPDM and steel?

Had a little polyurethane glue left, scuffed up the rubber, cleaned the steel, and clamped them together.

My flapper sticks open a lot . I have replaced the motor 3 times .I clean and grease the linkage weekly but it seems to stick open.I have added an extra return spring and a stop to keep it from opening over center but it still sticks open. I put a new motor on last week and so far so good. If I could figure this out the boiler would be great. Any ideas?

Hi KarlK, how have you been? haven't seen you on in a while, I hope all is well. Did Brian ever talk to you about the nozzles for the 250 ? Did you ever come up with a larger one?  I'm not sure why you are having issues with your actuator motor not returning to closed position, are you getting a lot of moisture in the air box?

Karl,
Check the actuator rod itself where it rides in the air box tube, there is a small grove that I found get crusted.

I dont hear much from Brian anymore but did talk to Rory about nozzles and yes I have larger openings and a nice taper that works great and seems to hold up well. I added a 1300sqft shop with 10ft ceilings to my heat load and the boiler/nozzle combo keeps up fine.
All my linkage works freely. This motor is a lot quieter than the last 2, I cant hear it open and close from the front of the boiler like before.
Yes I am getting water in my air box for some reason. If I could stop these issues this boiler would be perfect! PS I got a vertical tube cleaner from Marty, almost makes cleaning the tubes fun!

Any air leakage at door gaskets or air box?

Take a few screws out of the bottom left of the air box cover, water will go away.

Mine would stick open just a tiny bit when I first got it.
I held the rod open with a Vice-Grip pliers and bent the flat strap (what the "flapper" is attached to) downward about a half inch.
Took care of the issue completely.
I like to hear a nice, loud "clank" when the boiler is done cycling.
The other two guys that bought theirs at the same time as me did the same tweak as me, and they've not had any issues either.

BTW,
The nozzle I got from karlk last year has held up wonderfully!
After all of last season and this year so far, there is very little wear at all. I have no doubt in my mind that it will easily get me through this year too.
I am VERY, VERY impressed with his masonry skills!

I recently traded him a 3 dollar tube cleaner for a hundred dollar nozzle.
I almost feel guilty about that trade. (ALMOST! ;))

I dont think I have any air leaks I have all new silicone gaskets. I can hear the flap close, but before I could also hear the motor run.Now with this motor I cant hear any motor noise. it would stick open at full open or about the 11 o clock position. Also dont tell Marty but his tube cleaner works so good I would have sent him 2 nozzles.
