Door gasket
« on: December 03, 2015, 05:53:53 PM »

My door gasket at the bottom of my door is as hard as a rock  I think from creosote. I don't think I'm getting a good seal. anyone have any suggestions on a certain kind of gasket I could use. I put a new gasket on this fall that I got from Ridgewood.

Much cheaper and easier to use if you can find it for a caulking gun.

Would you need to do this when the stove is cold, or can you do it while the stove is in operation? By it, I mean replacing the rope with the silicone? How many tubes did it take for your door and what size door did you have?

Thanks.

my old door was 20 x 20 i think....it only took 1 tube as i can recall.....i just placed a fat bead in the groove where the rope would go and smoothed it flat with a piece of cardboard. I did mine in the spring when the stove was shut down. I left the door cracked and let it cure for 48hrs. If you dont want to shut down just get a tube of high temp caulk and a 1 inch rope gasket....apply a small bead and place the rope in the groove and you are good to go

wish I could do it now  but  will I need to shut down. That sounds better then messing with that rope gasket.

I thought about this but opted to install a rope seal and coat it with the silivone. So far it seems to be holding up well.

How many seasons does the silicone only seal hold up? I will have to replace mine next year and I am deciding which way to go with it.

I did this to my Ridgewood 2000 this fall before start up. I cleaned out the groove where the old rope seal was. I put a heavy bead of high temp (red) silicone around the groove and pushed in two 5/8" rope seals side-by-side into the silicone. Then covered the rope seals with more silicone. I smoothed out the silicone and closed the door loosely with wax paper between the flange and the silicone seal. This made an imprint of the flange in the silicone. I let it set-up for a day and peeled the wax paper off. Just make sure to put the wax side of the paper to the silicone, believe me. So far it's holding up well. I'll know more in January and February when it's burning hard.

For the first few years I found the rope held out well but the contact type glue that comes with it would not last.  Now I am another convert to the silicone/rope pairing.  Standing up well so far.

I did pretty much the same on my waste oil boiler I built last fall but didn’t have any wax paper, aluminum foil works as well, especially if you spray it with Pam first.
