I bought a house a few years ago and my hardy is placed a little far from the house. It burns around 16 rank of wood a year I would like to learn a few tricks on making it more effencient. Anybody have any tricks they have learned. Does a pipe cap help?

Pipe cap won't help a bit.... 

There isn't a lot you can do to the furnace itself, most hardy installers I've seen go cheap on the underground pex and make wood use worse.   

Ive also seen guys remove the cover from the hardy and build a new houseing around it, a lot of work and probably a slight gain in efficiency.

A guy I work with has a hardy as do I and he says he loads his wood the being 24" long cross ways of the door keeping the wood off of the sides. He says it makes it to where the fire can reach all sides. Not sure if it will help this being my first year but he said he cut his wood usage in half... he said he used to just throw it in there I am going to try it and see if it helps

Cut his wood use in half by changing how he stacked it?  Last winter was the mildest winter in recent history, I'd say that's where the savings were

He started doing that years ago just thought I would put it out there I don't know much just getting into this no big deal

no big deal but i kind of thought it makes sense my fire box is 30 inches by 30 inches you think that if i cut the wood 24 like this guy says so the fire can heat the sides does that make sense to you vs the wood touching the sides. i figure if the woos is full length and filled all the way up the fire would just heat the top going out the stack
