Newbie Hardy question
« on: November 09, 2012, 08:10:12 AM »

How often do you guys let your Hardy burn down.  My dealer told me every 3 to 4 days...  Do you guys let it burn down completely and then clean ash box and grate?  Just curious how others are doing this and what kind of procedure you guys go through?  I'm new to this and any info or help is very much appreciated!

I don't really let mine burn down too much.  But... if I have the time I will let it burn down to try and burn up some of the coals so that I don't have as many to scoop out.  I find that if I am burning wood that is somewhat wet it will produce a lot more coals than the dry wood.  I'll just flatten them out in the ashpan (as in just leveling them out, you know how they tend to just pile up in one area?)  and it usually burns them up over time.

As far as cleaning out the ashes, you can do that at any time you don't have to let the stove burn down.

I have burning for close to fifty days this year and have only removed ashes twice and I didn't remove many when I did it. People who have them told to keep as much ash on there as possible

You just want to keep the ashes from being too close to the grates.  If they get too close they will warp the grates.
