Thanks RSI, I should have thought of vinegar.

Cheap and readily available I will give it a try.

I literally just came here to ask the same question!

Our water is extremely hard and will plug up a 20 plate exchanger in 1 1/2 to 2 winters use.

I have the flush ports already on my plumbing.

What's with all the satellite dishes?

Long-time hobby, C & Ku-band TVRO.

Before we were able to get (somewhat) usable internet service the dishes were our primary way of getting television.

Still fun to get stuff you can't get from the antenna, some sports...wild feeds...breaking news, etc.

There's more dishes that you can't see in that picture.

Oops, 2021, fixed thanks.

Don't post much but I stop in several times a week year-round.

Miss the "glory days' of this site when it had a lot more traffic but have no desire to wade the Farcebook cesspool.

I know there's still a few knowledgeable guys here that answer questions and am grateful for that.

Keep the flame burning!   ;)

And I'm baaaaaaaaaaack.

A combination of a mild early winter and buying propane at 99 cents a gallon led to me not firing up the beast until Monday February 8th this year.

When I saw the predictions of single-digit and teens highs for a week out and -20 to -30 wind chills I knew it was time to make some smoke.

Have a sister-in-law that lives in Saskatoon, she said they have had wind chills in the -60 to -70F range...jeeeez, I can't imagine living like that.

Will probably just burn for a month or so, we are usually seeing high temps around 60 in March and this old monster is hard to keep lit when it gets that warm.

And here's a current pic, Valentine's Day 2021.

Wye strainer for me too.  Found a few little tiny pieces of stuff after the first year but nothing since.

Just to update this thread I fired up this year on December 14, 2019.

This is year 6 for the homebuilt so I think my yearly cost for the whole system (furnace/enclosure/lineset/heat exchangers/fittings and misc.) is well below $300/year now.

Great investment and thanks again to all that helped me with my build!

Hi Mark,

I also had an issue with creosote sticking my blower flapper shut and I cured it by putting a paper clip on the flapper door, pretty sure someone here on this forum told me about that trick.

It does leave a very small air gap through the flapper when not blowing but that has never been an issue for my homebuilt.

And yes, you definitely need to raise your set points.  Mine is set at 183 to start the blower and 180 to shut it off.  It overruns to about 185 after the blower shuts off when it's relatively warm out (50 degrees or so).  I know that's a pretty tight temperature differential but I had issues with the fire going out on warmer days, no problems since I tightened the differential.

Here is a link to my build, nothing fancy but going on year 6 now, very happy I built it:

I just completed my 5th heating season with the same water.  I have added a couple gallons of water every year and this year I added a fresh quart of boiler treatment.

Got a strainer filter right where my lineset enters the basement that I check every year and it has had minimal crap in it.  I look at the water when I clean that filter and it still looks the same as year 1 as far as I can tell.

May change it out this summer, I ran our (extremely hard) well water through a multistage reverse osmosis filter when I filled the boiler the first time, took several days to fill it up using that method.

Planning on doing the same when I change it out next time.

Shut down for the season this morning, 4 1/2 months after we fired it in November.

Here's a pic of the beast, cooling down till next winter:

Shut ours down this morning, ran 4 1/2 months this year, new record for us.  Typically it's about 3 1/2 months.

The wax ring will take up a little slack but I would try to leave the closet flange close to flush (or just slightly under) the elevation of your finish flooring.

We don't have an issue with iron around here but our water is extremely hard, lime scale will totally plug a water-to-water hx in 2 heating seasons if you don't clean it.

When I filled my boiler I bought a 5-stage reverse osmosis filter and filled it from there, took about 7 days to fill.  Added boiler treatment also, of course.

This is our 5th heating season and the water-to-air hx in the furnace plenum is still going strong, doesn't seem to have any flow restriction as far as I can tell.

There is some conversation about different methods of treating water in my build thread here:  https://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?topic=3693.0
