General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Generator interlock
« on: December 23, 2017, 06:46:57 AM »
I feed my main panel through a 220V breaker.

Turn my main breaker off and also throw the main breaker on my meter loop.

Have a pole light on the coop side of the meter loop so I can tell when the power comes back at night, neighbor calls if it comes back in the daytime.

Got by in this fashion for 13 days in 2007, quite the ice storm then.

Fired off the beast for the season yesterday, this will be the 4th winter providing heat with this setup.

Didn't really keep track of the labor required to build everything but I was south of $2K cash outlay, so it was probably paid for after year 2.

Cleared a 1/4 mile of fence row a couple of weeks ago and rebuilt our steep and rut-prone driveway, that gave me about 5 years of oak and hickory that is now cut up and laying in the pasture curing out.

Thanks again to all who helped me out on this caper, couldn't have done it without you.

It takes about a season and a half to plug one here, burning an average of 4 months per season.

We have a lot of limestone everywhere around here, 2 quarries within a few miles.

Will be interesting to see how long this 20 plate lasts if I flush it once a year.

thanks EY, I will try that stuff out.

I will not have my pump running for sure, haven't fired up for the year yet.

Got my first loading built and laying in the firebox though, should put a match to it tomorrow afternoon.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Plate heat exchanger flushing fluid?
« on: December 04, 2017, 11:26:30 AM »
What liquid would be recommended for flushing a flat plate heat exchanger?

White Vinegar?-Straight or diluted?
Coil Cleaner?-I think I have some DiversiTech Pro-Green Indoor Coil Cleaner that I used on the A/C condenser this spring
Liquid Unobtanium?

Any tips or tricks?

I have a puddle pump and my ball valves on the flat plate have flushing ports.

Home Made / Re: Sizing my owb...build

You can run into issues with that from different expansion rates between the water cooled and non water cooled areas.

Good point, I had never considered that.

Friend of mine is considering doing something similar (extending fire jacket beyond the water), I will mention this to him.

I won't be much help answering your specific questions but here is a link to my build thread here:

http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?topic=3693.0

Lots of the pics got purged and I lost most of the others in a hard drive failure.   :(

Used to be a lot of people here that would help out/comment on the homemade builds, not sure what happened to them.

Good luck on yours, I am getting ready to start on the 4th winter with mine...not bad for well less than a $2000 investment, I think it's paid for now.   ;)

Definitely want to use clean gravel (not base rock with a lot of fines) under, around and over your lines.

Crushed limestone or clean screened creek gravel (if it is sized also) works well.

I have heard of people using sand (not sure if it was lime sand or river sand) but I would not recommend that.

Sand retains moisture much longer than crushed stone/clean gravel, you need something that the moisture can pass through.

What is available locally varies though of course but it's worth seeking out whatever will work best.

General Discussion / Re: Compressor tank - Repairable?
« on: October 02, 2017, 06:25:30 AM »
I have fixed a couple of these by finding a slightly bigger bolt (standard, metric, fine or coarse thread...it doesn't matter), coating the hole and bolt threads with JB Weld or epoxy, then forcing it into the hole with an impact.

Have one I did over 10 years ago and it is still airtight.

You may even have to drill your hole slightly oversize to find a good press fit for the new bolt.

All my method does is saves you from needing to tap new threads, crude but very effective.   8)

No recertification required here and no charge for leak testing.

If you lease a tank from a particular supplier they do require you buy your propane from them.

We run a 20 plate with no mixing valve and it works great, notice no variation in temp while taking a shower.

No axe to grind for me (I built my own), but I have read Slim's posts here for years and seen the support he has provided for all brands, on his free time, as well as testimonials from his actual customers.

You need to do your due diligence of course but...

...If I lived in his service area and was going to buy a new one it would be a no-brainer, Slim and the Magic Bus would be paying us a visit.

You definitely came to the right place (this forum) Jon_E, there are several very smart and experienced dealers/woodburners here that are glad to share their wisdom with all.

Good luck with your decision.

Not sure what your flapper setup looks like but on my homemade setup (with an Earth-brand door) I have just put a paper clip on the bottom edge of the flapper and that keeps it from sticking closed.
