General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Door Gasket?

I couldn't find any of the coated type when I was searching.  Does anyone have a link to some?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Door Gasket?

I need to replace the door gasket on my homemade firebreather and wondered what you all thought of this type/brand?

Rutland Grapho-Glas Stove Gasket Black Fiberglass Rope Tape

My door is a 20" x 20" that I bought pre-assembled from Earth Manufacturing here in SW MO.

What temp differential are you running on your aquastat now?

Might try tightening up the temp difference.

I'm at about 180/195.  I have an old Aquatherm so it's a draft fan vs natural draft. Right now I'm burning all dead dry ash and scrub from 1-2" up to about 6" diameter. And it's not that I will go 12 hours or more without heat demand (got down to 32 last night is all), but the small demand will not cause any drop in the aquastat to cause the draft fan to go. I'm not complaining mind you - if this keeps up its almost 6-8 weeks earlier than the last couple years!

I run a 5 degree differential (180 on-185 off) on mine all season long...with temp overrun it actually ends up being about an 8 degree differential.  I don't see any downside to running a tighter differential...would be interested in what the experts say about that though.

oldc...let me get this straight...so it cost you $150 to "save" $10 a month?!?!

That sucks.  If the jackasses in our government(s) can't figure how to kill the wood burners with environmental legislation they will be able to do it through the insurance aspect...and it won't be long the way things look.   :bash:

Electronics / Re: Aquastat for high limit cutoff?
« on: March 03, 2015, 06:23:44 AM »
More than likely the snap disc is placed in a spot that has little flow and being on the top of the boiler it is considered at the crown point which on a conventional unit will be the hottest point, perhaps simply moving it to the back near the aqua stat would help?

That makes sense, I bet you are right as usual!  I would have to take apart the front of my furnace to get to the existing snap disc...doable but a PITA.

May try just installing another snap disc on the back near my existing aquastat bung tap, and abandoning the existing snap disc.  I can install it through my access door on the back and fish wire to it without taking anything apart I think.

Good ideas Slim, thanks for making me think.

House side is gonna bung up first, especially if you slap a plate on the old DHWT.
It's full of crap!!!!...

Om mone, since the hotwater tank is downstream of the exchanger on the domestic supply loop the plate shouldn't be getting any of the tank crap in it, should it?

Need to redo mine and put valves on where it is easier to pull it out of the system.  I might get another identical one and keep a clean one on hand at all times too.

yes you can butI would use caution on where the probe is placed, your snap disc may be telling you that flow rates have decreased resulting in a hot spot on the boiler.

Thanks Slim but not sure what you mean by "flow rates may have decreased"?

The snap disc was only in the circuit for a day or 3 so I don't think the flow rates changed in that amount of time.

I put the snap disc on top of the water tank, about 6" back from the plate the door is mounted on.

If I go with a 2nd aquastat for high limit I can put the probe in a bung on the back of the tank, pretty close to where my original aquastat is plumbed in.

And don't even get me started on taxes and how they are distributed...   :bash:

Taxes are distributed in a way that buys the most votes for whatever party is in control at that particular time.

Hear, hear!

Question;  Should the house side (pressurized side) of the heat exchanger be flushed at the same time as the open side?  Roger

In my case it's not too bad yet but the house side is going to be the problem.  We have real hard water here (circulating through the house side), I used reverse-osmosis water with boiler treatment in the boiler loop and I don't think I have much restriction or deposits on that side of the hx.

Either way, you should definitely clean both sides while you are at it.

Hey thanks for the article, good read.  Sounds like insurance co. propaganda to me..but I am biased.   ;)
