Door Gasket?
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:22:47 AM »

I need to replace the door gasket on my homemade firebreather and wondered what you all thought of this type/brand?

Rutland Grapho-Glas Stove Gasket Black Fiberglass Rope Tape

My door is a 20" x 20" that I bought pre-assembled from Earth Manufacturing here in SW MO.

My next one will probably be the silicone coated type.

I couldn't find any of the coated type when I was searching.  Does anyone have a link to some?

I got mine from Portage and Maine, I'm not sure where they got it.

It’s messy but you can make your own, use high heat silicone and smear it into the rope, then place waxed paper over it and gently close your door to make an impression in it, open back up and let dry for twenty four hours.

Thanks to all for the replies.

ML, that sounds like a project that is right up my alley...hell, I built the furnace, surely I can pull your idea off.

Will do it before burning season and report back.

It’s not overly difficult, just messy.

It’s what I di don the door for the waste oil boiler I finished up this last winter, cost of 1” rope gasket was bad enough, can’t imagine what the precoated stuff would cost.

Mine is 3/4" and yeh, I was surprised at the cost.  I found a 47' roll of the Rutland rope I mentioned in my OP for about $75 shipped.

That should give me 6 or 7 changeouts.  Hi-heat silicone is next on my shopping list.

Can’t remember where I bought it, but I got the big tube of it for use in a caulking gun. Was the Permatex red.
